After about six years of adoration, I finally got to see my `hero`, Jim Thirlwell (aka Clint Ruin, aka DJ Otefsu). I have been a total sucker for the early Foetus albums (Nail, Hole) as well as his Wiseblood and Steroid Maximus material. Disappointing release after another, with Flow Foetus is back on track and I seriously wondered if he would be able to fulfill my needs on stage. The set kicked off with material from the new album, "Quick Fix", and included many of the new songs ("The Need Machine", "Mandelay", and the dramatic "Kreibabe") but also harked back to his older albums. Unfortunately, even though the public cried for those songs, he only chose to play a couple of the Nail/Hole songs ("Clothes Hoist/Lust For Death", "DI-1-9026" and an amazing rendition of "The Throne Of Agony" that included an instrumental intermezzo). Most of the other songs that were played were of mediocre level (mostly from the Gash album), with the exception of a frantic version of "English Faggot". Intriguingly, most of the old songs were orginally played with keyboard/vocals only, so it was very interesting to hear them played with guitar/bass/drum for a change. Jim himself seemed to be over his heroin addiction, but his behaviour made me wonder what kinds of drugs he was on this time. Looking like an attention deficit disorder patient with a psychosis, he bounced around the stage making weird faces and acting like the fucked-up rockstar he actually is, with thrusting pelvis and all. His backing band was properly taught the songs, but also didn`t seem to have any function other than playing the songs - all the energy came from Thirlwell. In overall, the show was not bad, but not satisfying enough. Even though, including encore, Foetus played over 75 minutes, there were too many songs that were _not_ played: "Sick Man", "I`ll Meet You In Poland Baby", "Pigswill" or more experimental songs from the new album such as "Cirrhosis Of The Heart", "Grace Of God" or "Heuldock #7b". Hopefully, in the near future, he will be able to come back and correct this mistake for us. (Review & Pics: Xander Hoose) |
