For more than 10 years this festival has been organised in the eastern part of The Netherlands. This 2002 edition contains no real stars (maybe except for the popular Dutch band Di-Rect) but focuses mainly on the upcoming new (inter)national talents, which is a good thing. With some 5300 visitors, Huntenpop has become a serious player amongst the smaller festivals in The Netherlands. Here`s an impression of what REZ saw at the 4 different stages from Huntenpop 2002.

Dialogue
Heineken Dance Stage, 13.00-13.40 hours
These 3 guys form one the most talented rock bands around in The Netherlands at this moment. Why is that? Well, Dialogue combines the finest musicianship with the ability to write very exciting songs. It`s as simple as that. This band creates a unique funky rock/metal sound of their own influenced by acts like Tool, Living Colour, Faith No More and the Red Hot Chili Peppers.

Already interested? None of their songs sound the same, yet have been written in the same original way which sets Dialogue apart from a whole lot of other bands around. And, creating a style of your own in 2002 is very difficult as we all know.

With fascinating compositions like "Colours In You", "I`ll Wait Outside", "Destitution", "What About Us?" or the outstanding "Drunk At 10 A.M." (what a groovy riff!), singer/guitarist Talie Wijlens, bassplayer Jerry de Mars and drummer/background vocalist Jeffrey Holthaus prove to be ready for a serious record deal. Come on recordlabels, wake up!

Dreadlock Pussy
Veldhunten Stage, 17.00-17.45 hours
Dreadlock Pussy has played almost every festival around our country this summer. Very well promoted by their recordlabel, the Dutch DP bring their so called `nu metal` to the Huntenpop area. Too bad, but DP isn`t the right band for this festival. You can`t blame the band or the organisation, the combination from DP and the Huntenpop visitors doesn`t seem to work today.

With material from their full length albums Sharpinstead, Tsumi and the EP Middles, DP sounds very, very angry. This gives the performance as a whole some kind of dark gloom which isn`t highly appreciated by the audience. Their powerful and agressive metal just can`t set the Veldhunten Stage on fire. Better luck next time.

Peter Pan Speedrock
Heineken Dance Stage, 18.15-19.15 hours
This completely over the top combination of Motörhead, The Ramones and AC/DC from The Netherlands rules. There you have it. Don`t care of this is the Dance Stage, fuck `em all. We are Peter Pan and we play ROCK`N`ROLL! Straight from Eindhoven Rock City, these three dudes tear up the stage once again.

With songs like "Mega Des Tittas", a Dutch interpretation from "Ace Of Spades" or "Dukes Of Danger" Peter Pan Speedrock proves to be a very powerful force within the current international rock scene.

They play at an almost ridiculous volume, but who cares? We want them LOUD, don`t we? Very impressive on stage performance and next to Dialogue the second real highlight from today.

Typhoon
MAG Stage, 20.45-21.20 hours
Typhoon is relatively new band from Arnhem-The Netherlands with a strong and emotional female singer. This girl, Simone Cornelissen, sets Typhoon apart from a lot of other alternative rock bands.

Since its formation Typhoon plays subtle but most of all dynamic rock music and has built a solid live-reputation in The Netherlands. The enthusiasm of Typhoon catches on and made the band win some pop awards (like A-Z PodiumPrijs 2001) and got them on stage with acts like Nilsson.

Anathema
Veldhunten Stage, 21.05-22.05 hours
I remember seeing Anathema a long time ago, when these guys played much heavier than nowadays. This might as well be some 10 years ago. In the year 2002, one could compare this band with The Gathering from The Netherlands. Starting out as a metal group evolving into a more mellow sort of poprock resembling for instance Radiohead meets Pink Floyd.

This accompanied by gaining new territory along the way and losing `old` fans. Just compare their first album "Serenades" with "A Fine Day To Exit" and you`ll get blown away by the difference.

Anathema was supposed to play Huntenpop last year, but didn`t make it for one reason or another. But now they`re here and we`re glad they made it because this is an impressive performance. With songs from all of their albums, this band succeeds in taking us along on their musical journey. It`s obvious the band is enjoying this gig and so do we. Both the musical performance and the vocals are more than okay. Good show!

Di-Rect
IJsselhunten Stage, 22.10-23.10 hours
What`s left to be said about these Dutch youngsters and their way to success? Again the boys present their well-known songs like "Inside My Head", "Free", "Just The Way I Do" or "My Generation" (from The Who) to us and again they get the crowd going. Di-Rect plays heavy power pop, catchy songs, beautiful (rock)ballads, good melodies and guitar riffs.

Jamie Westland (drums), Frans `Spike` van Zoest (guitars), Bas van Wageningen (bass) and Tim Akkerman (vocals and guitars) just have a good time on stage. It looks very spontanious but these guys know what they`re doing and are in control all the way. Love `em or hate `em, there is something special about this band.
