After a long hot summer it’s back to the dark and sweaty clubs to meet the some best bands from the various summer festivals again. I have to admit that I missed out on Tiamat and Pain during the festivals, so it was a great opportunity to see them both live again.

When we arrived at the Effenaar we noticed that the rebuilding of the venue had finally started. I was under the impression that they intended to build a new venue, but at the time it seemed that they are merely renovating the existing venue.

So, we went through the improvised entrance at the back of the building and find out that the first fans were eagerly waiting for the moment the Effenaar would open its doors. We faced a major setback when we found out that the management had decided that only one person was permitted to take photos during tonight’s show. We were only allowed to make pictures with a small camera without flashlight. When will the music industry realise that it’s about music and not just about making money and obstruct fans in their actions…
Enough about this. Most important thing is the music.

Pain
My reason for being here was actually the first band that played tonight. Taking into to account the progression displayed on the industrial-influenced Rebirth and the more diverse Nothing Remains The Same a headlining position on the bill might even justified.

If you look at today’s bill and the stage-time both bands have been granted one could consider it a co-headline position for the band of Peter Tägtgren (also known from Hypocrisy).

PAIN started with “It’s Only Them” during which it became apparent that Peter had trouble to make himself heard through all the noise. Fortunately this was quickly adjusted by a soundman that understood his business.

During the next song “On And On” Peter’s voice fitted the music better. He’s still not the best singer in the world, but that’s not necessary if you create this kind of extreme music. The band sounded impressively tight and extremely heavy.

Everything seemed to fit in perfectly and I have to admit that the band reproduced songs like “Suicide Machine”, “Dark Fields Of Pain”, “Injected Paradise” and “Expelled” (all from the above mentioned albums) in a way that would make any heavy bands jealous.

The commercial sing along song “Just Hate Me”, although that song sounds pretty catchy, and the cover of “Eleanor Rigby” (check out the version of Godhead instead) were less impressive.

PAIN’s previous and absolutely killer single “End Of The Line” was followed by the new single “Shut Your Mouth” and this last song ended a massively explosive live show. Their next target is to blast In Flames from stage next Friday at ‘Podium Hardenberg’, so be there and be warned…

Tiamat
Before the gig I thought that the combination PAIN and TIAMAT on one bill could mean trouble, especially if you consider that TIAMAT is known for its introvert way of playing music.

Johan Edlund (guitar/ voice) and co. however proved me wrong. Johan showed interest in his fans by giving them a hand and the band seemed better in shape than the last couple of times I saw them.

The more up-tempo rockers (for a Gothic rock band) like “Nothing”, “In Love With Myself” and “Brighter Than The Sun” impressed me heavily and made me realise why there are so many people who like this band. “So Much For Suicide” from Judas Christ was the first song that marked the transition into the dream world of TIAMAT.

After that the show slowly transformed into the show we know so well from this band: introvert and sometimes boring because the songs sound so much alike. Although “The Ar”, “Cold Seed” and last song “Gaia” prove that TIAMAT has some truly beautiful songs to offer fact is that the music sometimes lacks the tension to keep your attention throughout whole show.

Even a positive song like “Vote For Love” can’t change that feeling. Still, TIAMAT proved that when they are in their current shape they are able to entertain a crowd; it’s still a pity that I don’t seem to belong to them…
