The combined tour of Gothic rock headliner THE 69 EYES and the industrial metal act SULPHER passed by our little country, so it was time to check them out during their tour through Germany (and some other countries). An interesting line-up, because both bands have some good records to their name. SULPHER is on tour to promote their debut album “Spray” and THE 69 EYES is on the road for their latest album “Paris Kills”.

SULPHER
A show sometimes can be overshadowed by things that have nothing to do with the band itself. Sometimes it’s the smoke on stage, other bands use a lot of smoke during their show, but I’ve never seen a band that was lost in the fog during their show.

It made it hard to see what the band was doing and it created a strange spectacle. We saw a foggy cloud most of the time. It was a surprise that the band didn’t fell off the stage, because their view must have been obscured as well. Therefore it was impossible to get a real live “vibe”. You could hear the music, but you couldn’t see somebody creating it.

After their impressive show on Eurorock 2001 I can’t imagine that the band chose for this option. Musically SULPHER sounded tighter than ever. From the surprising opener ‘Disintegrate’ (surprising because it isn’t on their album “Spray”) the band proved to be a real killer live.

Especially the use of live drums made their music sound heavier and more direct than on record. The voice of Rob Holliday was in perfect shape as well. He screams, shouts, sings and whispers. And whatever he was doing, you could still understand the lyrics.

It’s a pity that impressive songs like ‘Scarred’ - with the drum break in the end of the song - ‘Misery’, ‘One Of Us’, ‘You Ruined Everything’, ‘Fear Me’, ‘Unknown’ and ‘Problem’ were overshadowed by the London syndrome. ‘Don’t buy our record, our music is shit’ was a wrong interpretation of Rob Holliday in the end of their show. I love the music, but next time I want to see a band!!!

THE 69 EYES
These Finnish know how to rock, that’s for sure. All the clichés were out there tonight. The mixture of Gothic influences put the music of THE 69 EYES between the likes of HIM and The Sisters Of Mercy. From opener ‘Crashing High’ until their encores of ‘Stigmata’ and ‘Brandon Lee’ the band proves to be a well oiled machine.

The low, dark voice of Jyrki fits perfectly on top of the typical Gothic rock guitar riffs, pounding bass and drums. Sometimes the band uses samples, because there are no keyboards on stage. Most of the audience seem to have come for this band, because it gets pretty crowded in front of the stage.

The band plays most songs from the “Paris Kills” and “Blessed Be” albums. Although the band has some highlights with songs like ‘Gothic Girl’, ‘Angel On My Shoulder’, ‘Don’t Turn Your Back On Fear’, ‘Still Waters Run Deep’

I have one complaint. The music of THE 69 EYES sounds the same most of the time. Sometimes Jyrki tried to keep the attention with a joke, but it didn’t work every time. Although it was funny to hear that the sunglasses were connected to the song ‘Grey’.

Check the lyrics and you know why… In the end THE 69 EYES proved to be a solid rock band with some great songs, but with a lack of diversity. Enjoyable enough for most of the audience though and that’s the most important reason for the band to play live…
