Mystrez Judging their stage performance, this Dutch band is relatively young. Their pop rock has somewhat of a U2 sound but is presented in a poor and inexperienced way. The huge stage at the 013 club is way too big for Mystrez, they just can’t handle it. This, combined with the sometimes terribly off key guitars and vocals doesn’t make us want more for sure. When the crowd reacts very enthusiastic as you announce the last song of your set it says enough, doesn’t it? Mystrez obviously has got a lot to learn before playing a stage this big again. Dio Songs like the title track or “Push” take us back to the famous 1983/1984 era when he released the classic “Holy Diver” and “The Last In Line” records. But what’s the status of RJ Dio in 2002? Well, with some 1.500-2.000 fans at the 013 he proves to still have a very strong fan base in the Netherlands. Not surprisingly the band hits the stage with the title track from their latest cd. Drummer Simon Wright and bassist Jimmy Bain (who`s looking very energetic tonight) are familiar faces, but the guitarist and keyboardist are ‘new’. Well, Doug Aldrich (guitars, ex-Hurricane and ex-House of Lords, currently with Burning Rain) and Scott Warren (keyboards) are their names. Seeing Dio on stage always is a great joy. He has this everlasting symphatic smile and within the first few lines, he convinces everyone present at the 013 venue. Yes, he`s still the little man with the big voice! After more than 30 years, his voice even seem to be better than ever before. Here`s the rest of the setlist, including some suprises here and there: “Egypt (The Chains Are On)”, “Children Of The Sea”, “Push”, drum solo (including the “Carmina Burana” theme), “Stand Up And Shout”, “Rock & Roll”, “Don’t Talk To Strangers”, “Man On The Silver Mountain”, guitar solo, “Long Live Rock & Roll”, “Lord Of Last Dance”, “Fever Dreams”, “Heaven & Hell”, “Last In Line”, “Rainbow In The Dark” and “We Rock”. If the band keeps on doing shows like this one, DIO can go on and on, on and on… (Pics by Erik Koster) (Review & Pics: Johan Godschalk) |
