Filled with high expectations we went to see the special Halloween show of CIRRHA NIVA. Although I had already seen the band during their early (demo) years, I was expecting something more Gothic orientated.

Especially their appearance on this year’s Wave Gotik Treffen made me curious. Another thing that piqued my interest was the fact that they have released a concept-album and decided to perform said album live on stage with costumes and other special attributes.

But unfortunately the only special Halloween atmosphere came from the audience. They were dressed up and probably not getting what they expected as well, because there were a lot of people talking throughout the concert. It was sometimes difficult to hear the music.

Although the story of Liaison De La Morte is reminiscent of all the other tales we know so well (let’s call it “the good, the bad and the pretty”) the music was pretty original. The well-played progressive rock/metal is supported by the good voices of Liselotte Hegt and Arnold Kloek.

Although Arnold sometimes tries to impress too much with the same trick, he’s got a good and clear voice. The combination with the powerful voice of Liselotte works wonderfully well.

New guitar player Rommert van der Meer played very well, although at times the sound of one of the guitars (was it his?) was a tad too sharp. In the end he got so much response from the audience that Arnold commented he had more fans than the band.

Of course the band played the whole show of Liaison De La Morte and some old songs as well.

It’s a pity though, that I never got the idea that I was at a special Halloween show. Even after the concert we had to listen to progressive rock and I have absolutely no idea what this music has to do with the spirit of Halloween…

So we left early and went to see a Russian folk/rock band in another venue. Strangely enough the Halloween spirit here was more present than in Doornroosje. That says enough, doesn’t it?
