We started early this Saturday. There was a Gothic & Fantasy fair during the day (on Sunday as well). We found out that the Darling Market had more to offer than this fair alone, because when we went into the CD/LP room we saw two big flags of Elvis… Although some people feel that Elvis is alive and you can say that these people have a great fantasy it’s not what we were looking for…

THE FAIR
Was somewhat small, but cosy. The combination of the Gothic & Fantasy Fair with the other stuff (like the other CD/ LP fair) created a somewhat strange atmosphere. The live spectacles of different groups were nice and entertaining. Medieval instruments, outfits and fighting knights created the right atmosphere. The fair was set up apart from the rest in one of the halls and the stands were dressed up appropriately. You could buy different things all together, like clothes, candles and so on.
If you consider that this was the first time that this was organized it was pretty well done (and no, it wasn’t WGT – yet -, but what can you expect?)

THE FESTIVAL
After a small break which we used to get something to eat in the centre of Rijswijk we found our way back to the Darling Market. At 20.00 o’clock the doors opened and the first band started at around 21.00 hours. FUNKER VOGT’s show was set to end at 03.35 o’clock in the morning, maybe that explains why there weren’t too many people at the festival. Especially considering the size of the hall in which the festival took place it wasn’t very crowded. Still, the people gathered in front of the stage so most of the bands didn’t feel completely lost. It was strange to see people coming from apparently nowhere to fill up the space between the stage and the sound table.

ANGELS & AGONY
The Dutch band ANGELS & AGONY had the honour to open this festival. Although they had a false start with songs like ‘Lost’ (the voice of Reinier Kahle didn’t sound very well during this song) and the somewhat simply arranged ‘Don’t Be Afraid’ the band found itself during the rest of their set. The following up-tempo beat ‘One’ showed that the band – and the voice of Reinier – just needed some time to adjust to the circumstances.

Songs like ‘Surrender’ and ‘Revelation’ showed that there’s some growth possible for this band. On the other hand songs like ‘Forever’, ‘Darkness’ and ‘Stormhead’ (played for their German fans) proved that the combination of guitar, electronics and the voices of Reinier and Marco van Belle could work wonderfully well.

FASHION SHOW
Soon after that there was some time to look at the dresses of some ladies and a small boy who showed some karate.

STOA
The gloomy, melancholic STOA proves to be an impressive quiet moment tonight. Mandy Bernhardt’s classic voice is a good replacement for Antje Buchheiser. Her voice resembles a lot of what is on offer on their latest record “Zal”. Although the quiet music is completed with some images the show is a bit boring to see, but the band made up for that with the (electronic) music of Olaf Parusel and the cello of Christiane Fischer.

The best way to listen to this music is to close your eyes and to float away. It was a pity that most of the audience didn’t feel that way. You could hear them talking all the time. A little disturbance for some people seemed to be in trance with songs like ‘Alone’, ‘I Wish You Could Smile’ (which could be the right title for Mandy) and the beautiful ‘Chanson D’Automne’.

COVENANT
The most popular band of this evening was definitely THE COVENANT. After the release of “Northern Light” (and the commotion about the copy protection) the band proved to be in perfect shape. From opener ‘Monochrome’ the band was up and going. The voice of Eskil Simonsson fits the music perfectly well.

It’s funny to see that the different band members got a bit of the countries and cities they are living in. Eskil lives in Berlin and looks and moves a bit like David Bowie during his Bahnhof Zoo period. Joakim Montellius jumps up and down like the temperament we are used from countries in the south of Europe (he lives in Barcelona) and Clas Nachmanson is as introvert as you can expect from someone who lives in Helsingborg (Sweden).

THE COVENANT played some great electro pop songs with ‘Stalker’, ‘Call The Ships To Port’, ‘Bullet’, ‘We Stand Alone’ and ‘One World On Sky’ and it just felt like the band didn’t played long enough…

We realised that all the rumours were true, no Haujobb on this festival. Their own website showed that the band was touring in the States. We heard later that the organisation wasn’t informed and that the management promised that the band would perform tonight on the Triganda stage.

FUNKER VOGT
This German electro/ industrial band keeps their promises. Although a big part of the crowd had gone home the band gave their full 100%. Energetic and a bit drunk (? – but who wasn’t at this time) FUNKER VOGT showed that they are at their best when they go ‘full force’.

Just to be heard Jens Kästel had to shout more than on the album. Guitar player Thomas Kroll was probably the most active on stage (he went up and down on stage and making funny faces to the audience). Gerrit Thomas proved to have eye for a fan (with Funker Vogt t-shirt) in front of the stage when he made a picture of him.

The music itself was energetic as well with songs like ‘Date Of Expiration’, ‘History’, ‘Killing Fields’, ‘Lügner’, ‘This World’ and ‘Funker Vogt 2nd Unit’. Surprisingly they played the ballad ‘Red Queen’ as well. Great, funny and energetic show…

In the end we can conclude that the TRIGANDA festival was a success musically and that the concept definitely deserves a second chance. We have to remember that WGT wasn’t built in one day (and hopefully the TRIGANDA ORGANISATION won’t go bankrup as the former WGT). It would probably be better to schedule the bands earlier on the day next time so people can go home with public transport or don’t have to stay in Rijswijk in a hotel. Hopefully we’ll see a new TRIGANDA FESTIVAL next year…
