Audioslave The idea of Chris Cornell, vocalist of Soundgarden, most metal of all Seattle`s grunge bands, fronting the musicians from (the now defunct) Rage Against the Machine, Los Angeles political funk-metal band, fascinated from the start. Audioslave`s self-titled debut album was received very well and now also the Dutch fans are waiting for the songs to be performed live at the 013 stage. Kicking off with "Light my Way", "Set it Off" and "Gasoline", they look ready to pull it off. Cornell looks every inch the rock star, while his fellow musicians play as tight as you`d expect of men who have been playing together for that long. Guitarist Tom Morello, the man with the extraordinary and remarkable unique guitar sound rules the 013, while the rhythm section of Brad Wilk and bassist Tim Commerford, are really funky in whatever style they choose. Right after these first three songs Cornell tells us that we won`t be getting any Rage or Soundgarden tunes tonight, which is quite understandable. Why form a new band to play old stuff? Audioslave impresses the most with either furious rockers like "Exploder" and "Cochise" or with emotional mid tempo compositions like "Shadow On The Sun" and "The Last Remaining Light". Audioslave are certainly impressive and this makes them a must see. No doubt about that. But they don`t succeed in getting "the fire" across all the way. The 013 show misses the early nineties RATM & Soundgarden energy. Too bad.
