Brainshake
For no apparent reason there was a huge line when I arrived at The Melkweg. To get in took me just about long enough to miss Brainshake. The whole point of being the supporting act of a bigger band is that you can get publicity you wouldn’t get on your own. So, to make up for that, here’s their URL: www.brainshake.nl. This band combines melodic parts with furious outbursts of riffs and screams. They play Nu Metal and are pretty good at it.

Mudvayne
Mudvayne is actually one of the few bands within the Nu Metal genre that deserves to be called Metal. The riffs, aggression, speed, etc., it’s all there. They combine it with a distinctive New Wave feel in the softer, melodic parts. The dynamics within the songs are actually even better than on the record. The whole band is convincing. The Wave influences give the show a little theatrical edge, but the way the band performs looks natural and unforced.

Mudvayne is known for their masks. Tonight, however, they’re only wearing black, white and grey make-up. Being able to see their faces makes it easier to relate to what’s happening onstage; because there’s more expression involved in their performance, the band is able to make the experience more intense. When the band members are wearing masks, this level of intensity is gone, and the music alone sometimes isn’t enough to get the message through, I think.

The variety of songs makes sure the crowd is with the band till the end. The sound is good and loud. All in all a pretty good performance by one of the most interesting bands in Nu Metal.
