And there they are again...the band that keeps releasing fantastic albums year after year once again returns to Europe; Spock`s Beard! An 11 date summer tour brings them back to Utrecht`s Tivoli, the venue of their first Dutch gig ever. It`s a fan`s luck with these kinds of Progrock bands, they play for fun, to please the growing fanbase and most of all to please themselves. The fun and energy is always a big part of a SB live show and tonights` performance was no exception... The band kicked in with a powerful version of `Beware Of Darkness` at 20:45 and said goobye at 22:55 after a fun-frenzied version of Deep Purple`s `Space Truckin`, with drummer Nick on lead vocal, singer Neal on drums, guitarist Al as Glenn Hughes impersonator #1 and keyboard crazed Ryo as Glenn Hughes impersonator #2. Ryu won by the way, his high pitched screams resembled the best. In between those two songs SB celebrated their growing song catalogue; at least one song from each album was featured in the set, with `Harm`s Way` from `The Kindness Of Strangers` as the surprise. `The Great Nothing` from the `V` album (`exaggerated` by Neal Morse as "The longest song ever known to mankind.") was the epic masterpiece and the personal statement of Neal Morse about the music bizz, when it was finished and the huge applause hit the stage Mr. Morse even seemed a bit emotional. A SB show is in any case always fun; Ryo Okumoto is crazy, a well known fact by now, (his jokes are getting old by the way; "How does Bruce Lee order a drink in a restaurant? - Wataaaaaaaaaa!!") but tonight Al Morse was the funniest. All over the place running, jumping, singing, goofing with the other guys, all while playing the guitar in that perticular unique way with his fingers...a must see. Ryo was the only one with a solo and again he went into audience, going totally bezerk. It`s always nice to see the rest of the band enjoy that piece of the show, even bassist Dave Meros who is the relaxed guy in the background laying down the heavy carpet of bass sounds. Steve Harris, playing like Chris Squire in his best days...the cornerstone. Impressive again were the Morse brothers together on one guitar...both playing with two hands, left/right hand , right/left hand, maybe they DID have only one guitar in their yooth like Neal said jokingly. A piece of Steve Howe`s `Clap` (Yes) was included in the acoustic segment..a nice little surprise. All in all, another great evening of Spock`s Beard music...as always.
