My god, what a tremendous start of the week. One of my favourite bands of all time and two great support acts who are in a way related to SYL. Under the moniker ‘Keep It In The Family’ these three bands are on tour together. I had the privilege to witness this package (twice!), and write a review.

Zimmers Hole
Starting off was Zimmer’s Hole, which I think is a great band. Don’t look at them as a serious band, but more as a very entertaining group of metalheadz, who show their love for metal, and all the clichés that come with it in a combination of music and a special stage performance.

The band’s lead vocalist Chris Valagao is painted fully red and wears nothing except for some sort of butcher cloth. He plays with rubber chickens and copulates a skeleton which reminded me of your mom… He sprays vodka from this huge fake dick he has hanging between his legs. He throws cheese in the audience during the ‘cheesy metal part’. During “Buttbarf” he pulls these faces that actually made me feel as if the poo dripped down my pants! No words at all can describe his appearance on stage!

There’re good musicians in the band, so their songs are performed really well. Their music is really enjoyable, although I must say that I like it live much better than listening to it at home on the couch. They played songs from both their albums, for example “Sodomanaz”, “1000 Miles Of Cock” (with a hilarious introduction!), “Fully Packed”, “This Is Metal” and “That’s How Drunks Drink!” (DRINK!!).

I found the performance really enjoyable, although the majority of the crowd was not at all enthusiastic… Oh well, I guess it’s just a matter of love ‘em or hate ‘em… At the end, Chris Valagao thanked a couple of people, among them Slayer and especially…“I want to thank your mom, for sucking my dick!!”

The Devin Townsend Band
The Devin Townsend Band is a completely different band. Where ‘as Zimmer’s Hole merely concentrate on fun and on their stage act, DTB play a far more progressive kind of metal. The band performed songs from all of Devin’s solo albums (Terria, Physicist etc.) and a couple of songs from his forthcoming album Accelerated Evolution. It is hard to described their music, one has to hear it in order to understand it.

The musicians in the band are fully capable of reproducing the studio songs. To me this performance was really good, although the reaction from the crowd wasn’t all that enthusiastic. But then again, it’s not the kind of music that makes you want to mosh your head off. Still, I think it would’ve been better to start today’s show with DTB, because ZH is a much better warm up act for SYL. Oh well, decisions like that are not up to us. But the decision to buy the new album is already made!

Strapping Young Lad
Strapping Young Lad rocks my hairy anus! To put it very simple, this performance will be one of the best of 2003!! Seriously, the musicians are really great, the songs are perfect for a live situation, the sound was almost perfect and the atmosphere was terrific!! I don’t have any words to describe this, ‘cause words lack everything great about this concert.

The band played songs from all three albums, although I think their debut Heavy As A Really Heavy Thing has been done short with only two songs; “SYL” and “In The Rainy Season”. A lot of songs from SYL, and almost all songs from City, except for the outro, the cover song and “Underneath The Waves”. All songs were performed in an excellent manner. Not strange if you consider Gene Hoglan sits behind the drums. This man is incredible! During one of the songs, a woman crawled on stage and flashed her breasts right in front of him, and he wasn’t distracted for one second!! Sure, he looked but kept playing at the same level of intensity and geniality!

So all in all, a great evening with great bands, although I still think that the order in which the bands played could’ve been better. That doesn’t change the fact that this concert was great and probably will be my best one for 2003!!
