Six Feet Under   Hedon-Zwolle   Jun 29, 2003

Fellow REZ writer Friso couldn’t be here tonight, so I took the job. Well, no problem with that, since I’ve been a fan of Six Feet Under from the beginning. There was a line-up change; INRI couldn’t be here and instead Prejudice and Obscenity, replaced the band with their brutality. Because of the line-up change, the show started earlier so unfortunately I missed Prejudice.

Obscenity
As we entered the venue Obscenity was busy performing their obscene death metal style (hahaha Obscenity playing obscene death metal, ahum). Nonetheless, what they did was fucking (excusez moi) hard; a ferocious performance with great technical skills. I haven’t seen that many drummers performing blast beats this fast. I don’t know which songs they played, for I’m not familiar with their music (shame on me). Great show, although the audience remained quite apathetic.

Six Feet Under
This changed immediately after all-time death metal hero Chris Barnes showed up with his comrades. As soon as they started to play their first song “Violent Silence” I slipped into a trance. Something only good metal concerts will do to me. Although the band mainly plays mid-tempo, from the start ‘till the end people were moshing in front of the stage. Songs like “Suffering In Ecstasy”, “Haunted”, “The Day The Dead Walked”, “Torture Killer” and of course my absolute favourite “Human Target” were played and I can tell you, it was excellent!

The only downsides of this evening were songs from the Graveyard Classic album and the last two songs. If they had played Warhead (from GC) it would have been cool, but this one I didn’t know, all in all a bit superfluous. Gave me the opportunity to get some beer. After that we were treated with a song from their forthcoming new album Bringer Of Blood, called “Bringer Of Blood” (the lyrics went like Bringer Of Blood 12 times). But it sounded old school, so we don’t have to worry about that.

I have no idea what the rest of the crowd was thinking, but I was waiting for their death metal classics “War Is Coming” and “Bonesaw”. As they started their encore with “Non-Existence” and ending with “Beneath A Black Sky” I was really disappointed! A bit of a shame, but what the hell, this was one of the better death metal shows I’ve seen this year.
