Canadian jazzpunk outfit NoMeansNo have become somewhat of a cult legend on their own, with their unequalled virtuosity in musicianship and lyrics. Being an ongoing factor in the scene for over 20(!) years now, they`ve earned their respect and thus it didn`t surprise me that today`s show was more or less sold out. There was no opening act, as the van of the band who were supposed to play got stolen earlier on. This being the last show in the tour, NoMeansNo decided to start a little bit earlier and play just a little bit longer - a decision we didn`t regret! The first thing that struck me was the age of the bandmembers. OK, I know this band has been around a long time, but no one expects - when going to a punk concert - to see people on stage that could be your dad! I almost had the impression that before me stood a couple of farmers who were put on some ragged shirts and jeans and given some instruments. Until they started playing. That`s when I realized, old or not, these guys rock harder than 99% of the kiddie bands who conquer the commercial charts right now. The brothers Wright (on guitar/vocals and drums) gave us a display of total commitment to freaky music. Unfortunately, their latest album ("No One") doesn`t seem to have the impact of the previous albums - not on CD nor live. While most of their older material tonight was harsh, fast and cynical, the newer songs took the speed out of the set and made people impatient as the songs were generally too long. They also played very little songs of the magnificent "Dance Of The Headless Bourgeoisie"-album (as I later heard, this was due to Rob`s vocal chords which were not up to the task) but they made up for it by playing plenty of songs from the "The Worldhood Of The World"-album, which also proved to be the public`s favourite songs (`Wiggly Worm`, `Lost`, `Angels`). Oldies as `Sex Mad` and `The Day Everything...` also had a good impact on the audience, and add to that the public-friendlyness of the brothers Wright and their good showmanship and there`s not a lot that leaves to be desired. After doing two encores, ending in the obligatory cover of the Ramones` `Beat On The Brat`, the audience was still screaming for more, and since it was their last show they decided to pull off one more encore, playing `Nowhere` as their final song. Tonight was definitely a proof once more that NoMeansNo is alive and kicking, hopefully their next album will be a lot more frantic and frenzied again and I`m surely going to catch them on tour again!
