In the east of this little country called The Netherlands we have a reputation for metal concerts. In the 90’s people could attend almost every weekend a good show in venues like Metropool, Hedon, Lantaarn, Doornoosje and a bunch of others. I recall bands like Enslaved, Immortal, Vader, Cannibal Corpse, At the Gates, Napalm Death, Deranged, Vomitory, Deeds of Flesh and many many more playing these parts. Those were the times… But now, anno 2003, death/black metal shows in this area are as numerous as nipples on one female’s breast. Not much indeed. But tides are hopefully turning with organisations like the E.H.B.O., Metal Front Twente and Metal Front Zutphen, organising all kinds of shows again.

It all began with a furious set from local heroes Deification (E.H.B.O.). This was a perfect warming-up round. Front man aka grunter Willem is the big man in this band and his vocal imitation of a grizzly bear is almost perfect. Their music however is of a lower level than the other two bands, but still they’ve got some classic songs like “Kill the concept of god” and “Beaten to pulp” (if I recall it correctly).

Gorerotted
Pfff, and then Gorerotted. This is death metal mach three. This show was pulverizing, grinding and not human anymore. I don’t know where they make such drummers, but give me one too! I haven’t got the faintest idea what they’ve played (I’d never heard anything by them), and even if I would know, there are no words for such a band. Blasting, blasting, blasting, blasting and blasting in such a technical manor, this has only one purpose: DESTROY! Gorerotted is definitely on of the best bands around these days. I hope they come back soon again.

Pungent Stench
After a break Pungent Stench’s intro began and in their tradition they entered the stage in minister-clothes. In my personal tradition this evening I don’t know anything about this band, although this band was one of the elite early 90’s in this genre. Shame on me (yeah I know). Their music guaranteed a massively, violent pit from begin ‘till the end, which says enough about the public response. After a few songs their clothes flew aside and so they continued in their boxer shorts (ganz geil!...). This was just a hell of a show, all the way to their last two songs “La Bamba” (I heard they do this one every time) and another one. This one I missed due to our friends of the railways, who didn’t want to wait for me, so I had to run for the train. Anyway, this was finally a good evening again.
