I think I just saw my concert of the year. There was a party going on at music hall 013 and 2000 people had the pleasure to be there. Although it all started a bit slowly with the opening act Hi-Dramatic, a Dutch Rockabilly band. Their sound was good, the music as well. I enjoyed it. But as far as sphere the band was not able to get the audience off their feet. The bandmembers did not exactly come across as enthousiastic, as pointed out by their closing words: thanks and maybe we`ll see you at the bar (said in a very dry way). But then Brian Setzer and his bandmembers started rockin`. They came, they saw and they conquered. It was like three madmen on stage with Brian as a true frontman really enjoying himself in his American alley décor with fence, old gaspump and garagesigns. He was in his element, on stage with just a drummer and a hell of a contrabass player. I think I like this better than the shows with his orchestra, because it`s less polished. It was like seeing where it all started (I was too young when the Stray Cats strutted). The music they played was a mixture of old and new, of Stray Cats songs, like the classic Runaway Boys, and new songs from the album "Ignition", like one of my favorites "Rooster Rock". Tonight Brian Setzer was the king of Rock `n Roll (that is one who`s still alive, nobody beats Elvis). It was an evening back to roots. Therefor I think this concert deserves to be in this magazine. No, I think it should be. After all, remember where the rock came from. (Review & Pics: Yvonne Boonaerts) |
