The Flower Kings Every time The Flower Kings play a gig in The Netherlands, I try to be there. Ever since I first saw these guys, this Swedish band has gained a special place in my heart. What makes this band far from ordinary is the way in which they are able to create catchy songs by using returning themes and not by popular refrains. Watching the different musicians actually play their instrument adds a lot to the rather complex music. Looking back at the gig I must admit that this night was probably my least favorite Flower Kings performance so far. This had nothing to do with stuff like the set list, the sound, the skills of the musicians, nothing like that. The music was of a standard high level and songs like “A Vampire’s View”, “Love Supreme” and “The Truth Will Set You Free” (the first encore) gave me goose bumps all over. The problem is that it used to be fun to watch these guys. Despite the fact that front man Roine Stolt clearly runs his band, there used to be a real band on stage. Bass player Jonas Reingold used to give away a pretty dynamic show, almost living his instrument. Since Pain Of Salvation’s Daniel Gildenlöw joined the band, Reinhold has to settle for a small spot at the back of the stage. Keyboard player Tomas Bodin used to bring the entire bunch in higher spheres with his ‘flower power’ and his incense. Tonight he seemed more like a wallflower, just doing his part. There is of course always Hasse Fröberg but his energetic performance is in such a contrast with the rest of the band that he actually does not seem credible at all. It was strange to see that every time he approached Roine, the latter turned away from Hasse. The only person Roine seemed to have any interest in was vocalist, percussionist and guitar player Gildenlöw. Tonight The Flower Kings left the impression that all members preferred to be busy with one of their many solo projects. I wouldn’t be surprised if Adam & Eve is the final Flower Kings album. Then again, maybe the boys were just having a bad evening. Most people probably didn’t even notice and must have really enjoyed the excellent music.
