Travelling the country in search of concerts to review I stumbled on the Jon Lord gig at the 013 in Tilburg. I had never heard of this guy, but the fact that he used to play with Deep Purple and that he was going to perform with members of the Gemini orchestra (I for one think that rock and classical music is an excellent mix) made me decide to check this guy out. The gig was labelled as symphonic rock so I had some idea of what to expect.

To be true things turned out quite different than I expected. The gig was symphonic indeed, but the rock factor was reduced to a mere fifteen minutes, fifteen incredible minutes that is. Most of the music was based on seventeenth and eighteenth century classical music re-arranged and altered by pianist Lord. Only the rare moments where Jon got behind his Hammond organ could be considered rock. Boy, did these sections ROCK! Tracks like “Pavane” and “Gigue” still boost my mind.

Even with a lack of rock content this evening turned out to be quite extraordinary. I had never heard an orchestra play the 013 so I was amazed by the excellent sound of the venue. This hall was designed as a pop and rock temple, but I know now that it can easily compete with music centres specially designed for classical performances. What made this evening even more memorable was the wit of mister Lord. He excelled in anecdotes, funny stories and some times even plain stand up comedy. This guy is a rock legend!

So in conclusion this evening was a major success. Jon Lord playing his Hammond is probably the closest you can get to rock, as are his stories. If you’re in for an entire evening of rock, you better reconsider going to one of his concerts though. Most of the music is symphonic or classical and I’m not sure most of you are up for that. I consider this as one of the better gigs I’ve seen in the last couple of months, the quality of both the music and the musicians just blows of the stage and right in your face!
