It had been quite some time since I had last visited Doornroosje, strange since the venue is only a five minute trip from where I live. Tonight dino rockers Wishbone Ash came to play Nijmegen. The support act was a band called Cloud 9. Before leaving for Doornroosje I searched the internet for information about this band, no easy task since there seem to be more than one band with this name. I found a Scottish Cloud 9, a girl group, which didn’t make much sense and a German band that had obviously ceased to exist. Their last addition on their webpage was dated beginning of January 2003! So without finding any information about Cloud 9, I went off to the gig. It didn’t take long before I found out that Cloud 9 actually is a Dutch rock band from Helmond. Noticing the reaction from the crowd I got the feeling that I was the only one there that hadn’t heard of this band. Either Cloud 9 brought along a lot of friends or Wishbone Ash fans really dig this band (probably a bit of both). Fact is that this band put down a solid performance with a leading role for the excellent rhythm section. I was quite surprised by the quality of the band. As a matter of fact this might be the first time something good comes from Helmond. At the time Wishbone Ash hit the stage, the venue was nicely packed, close to being sold out. The reaction from the crowd when the band made its entrance was pretty lame to be honest. It’s a good thing that Wishbone Ash was in an excellent mood, giving it their best. Tonight was going to be the final show of the European leg of their tour and these nights are generally something special, for the band as well for the audience. Tonight was such a night. The band was very relaxed and confident. The only time I had previously heard anything by Wishbone Ash was when I was writing a review of the Almighty Blues DVD. I remember being no too impressed. I can assure you that the live experience was something different. I enjoyed every minute of the show, being overwhelmed by the power of the twin lead guitars, the excellent bass lines and the charisma of both Andy Powell and Ray Weston. The only point of criticism I have to make is the fact that the volume of the music was way too loud resulting in some slightly trembling low and cutting high tones. As a matter of fact the music sounded better wearing earplugs. All in all tonight’s show was yet another evening well spent. It’s not hard to understand why this band is still successful after 35 years.
