I have a weakness for complex music and when I was asked to do a review on Mastodon, I didn’t need much time to think. They are considered one of the best metal acts of the moment. So I headed to the local venue with a lot of expectations.

Extol
Due to some extreme long waiting at a local cafeteria, I missed the first band. This is a shame, because I know a couple of songs of Extol and I liked what I heard. But unfortunately I was out of luck.

Dozer
Well, I was in time for the second band, which was Dozer from Sweden. I’ve never heard of the band, but after a bit of research on the beloved internet I found out that the four Swedes play stoner rock. Stoner is not my kind of music, so I wasn’t really enjoying the set. A lot of other people had fun during the show though and the smell of weed was everywhere.
The sound was very loud, but the band didn’t seem to bother. The played on like a bulldozer and the crowd witnessed a very energetic show.

Mastodon
The real bulldozer of the evening was Mastodon. Never have I seen such an energetic, aggressive, intense and flawless show. Most of the songs that were played in the set were from the ‘Leviathan’ album. The set actually began with ‘Hearts Alive’, a 13-minute epic masterpiece. Unfortunately, the sound was very loud and therefore some of the magic of the song was gone. Mastodon didn’t care about the sound and thundered on through the set. My personal favorites ‘Iron Tusk’ and ‘Blood And Thunder were played too and during those songs the pit was enormous and very aggressive. I guess a lot of people ended up real bruised and battered that evening. It was amazing to watch drummer Brann Dailor behind his kit. Now I know why he is called ‘The Octopus’, his arms are always moving in every direction. The mimics of Troy Sanders and Brent Hinds were very funny to watch and by those mimics you could see that both of them were enjoying the show. As did I!
