I’d arranged a photo pass for tonight’s gig mainly to see Autumn for the first time. You can imagine that I was slightly disappointed when I got word that this band couldn’t perform this night because Within Temptation invited the band to be their support during the tour. Nemesea was asked to take Autumn’s place in Nijmegen. I’d seen this young band from Groningen two months ago in ‘s-Hertogenbosch, and although the band played a solid set then, their music didn’t really convince me. Seeing the band for the second time, I noticed a couple of things. On the positive side I felt more appreciation for the songs played but on the negative side the moves of the musicians (call it choreography) looked very familiar. I hadn’t noticed this at their previous gig, but the moves and the expressions, especially by the vocalist just don’t look naturally. If you compare this to the natural, charismatic and relaxed moves by Epica’s Simone the contrast is huge. Music wise Nemesea surprised me, the presentation needs attention. As you can read in my review of Epica at ‘De Gouden Engel’ two months ago, the band amazed me with the progression they have made during the last two years. Tonight the band took the Epica live experience one step further. The band played as furious as in Oss, but the packed and cozy Doornroosje seemed to fit the band better than the huge (broad) stage at De Gouden Engel. The interaction between band and crowd was excellent and the smiles on the faces on stage actually said it all. Epica is a great collective of passionate musicians respecting each other and their fans. What else can I say; Epica is one of the best Dutch bands at the moment.
