One of the main reasons for me to go to my second Di-rect gig this year is the simple fact that it’s great fun to watch (and therefore photograph) this Dutch band. The charismatic Spike, the charming Tim and the expressive Jamie all guarantee a nice show. During their tour through our relatively small country the band visits almost every venue in the club circuit. It might just this reason why Doornroosje didn’t sell out by far. My guess is that only about 200-250 people, of course the larger part being girls averaging 16 years in age, found their way to Doornroosje.

The evening started off by the youngsters of Tweak. A young rock band from The Hague, Di-rect’s home town. It was obvious that most of the girls in the crowd had seen this support act before. The pretty faces of the boys caused quite some enthusiastic cheers from the crowd and also musically there was enough going on to get excited. The fact that the songs all sounded very, very familiar to the stuff Di-rect were going to play didn’t seem to bother anyone.

Di-rect played a really steady set that featured about every single one of their hits and even included some of their first ever written songs. The small stage and the rather small crowd didn’t seem to bother the band for a single moment. I can understand why. It must be nice to play before such an enthusiastic crowd. I know that most of you will label Di-rect as girl or even children rock, but in my opinion these bands are responsible for the still growing interest in rock among the female part of the world. And let’s face it, we still need more girls in the present day rock scene.

Personally some of my favorite tracks absolutely stood out, alone making it worth visiting the show. As usual it was a pleasure photographing Spike and Tim, too bad Jamie was coming on with a cold making his performance slightly bleak.
