I know I haven’t been too positive about Porcupine Tree gigs in the past (I’ve seen a few). To be true I found myself wondering why the hell I decided to go to one more PT concert this year. I mean, despite the fact that the music of Wilson and co is in one word incredible, visiting one of their concerts usually is plain boring. Only months back I’ve experienced a major disappointment at their Tilburg gig. I had suspected only few people to turn up at this reprise. I was wrong.

The queues in front of the 013 venue were the first indication that Porcupine Tree is more popular than ever. Entering the hall, I must admit, I was baffled by the fact that the show was pretty near to selling out. This made an end to my plans to find a place to sit and enjoy the music and see as little as possible of the foreseen static performance. This actually proved to be a blessing.

This night I’ve seen Porcupine Tree as I’ve never have before. The music, the picture, it all seemed to be in perfect balance (the slide show proved to be a great addition). Steve Wilson, more passionate than ever (the loud vocals in the mix proved to be a blessing and a curse) and clearly enjoyed playing a crowd of close to 2000. I stopped counting the number of times he left his two square meter carpet, this was his most expressive performance I have witnessed. The music itself was as solid as a rock. The power of the rhythm section was again overwhelming. The selection of songs played could probably be described as a Porcupine Tree’s fan wet dream. This night had a profound ‘best of’ character. The best songs were played, the musicians were at their best and the sound wasn’t far from perfect. Absolute highlights were ‘Buying New Soul’, ‘Halo’ and of course ‘Arriving Somewhere But Not Here’.

Porcupine Tree proved to be still improving. After tonight’s show I would advise everybody next time to get their ticket early. I’m certain that next time the show will be a complete sell out.

p.s. Some of you might wonder why I haven’t mentioned the support act Oceansize. I hated their music, so I don’t feel like reviewing their show which was pretty decent by the way. First four pictures: Oceansize
