It was a long time ago that Celtic Frost played in the Netherlands (around 19 years ago, I wasn’t even born yet), so a lot of people looked forward to see this gig on the first of June. Armed with my camera and pen & paper, I walked inside the Kade in Zaandam, to attend the only gig of Celtic Frost in the Netherlands. Dark Fortress Celtic Frost brought the German black metal band "Dark Fortress" to support their gig. A good choice if you ask me, but the reactions around me told me that a lot of people didn’t agree. A pity, because it’s clear these guys have talent. The tracks were diverse and varied, something that a lot of black metal bands miss. I don’t know the titles of the tracks, because I am not familiar with their work, but I think most tracks were from their latest work “Séance”, their fourth full-length. During "Dark Fortress", it became a bit more crowded in the Kade. A relief, because when DF started playing there weren’t that much people, and I was a bit afraid it would stay quiet. Fortunately I was wrong. The Kade was filled now with enthusiastic people, waiting for Celtic Frost. Celtic Frost In the end they played "Into the Crypts of Rays" and of course, everybody was singing with them. The atmosphere was great, I really enjoyed being there. Remarkable was that, despite it was their "Monotheist tour", they only played two tracks of that album, "Ain Elohim" and "Synagoga Satanae", which was their last track at this gig. Every track they played was without any mistake. Not a string thing for a band that’s playing for such a long time already, but if you think about the fact they didn’t played live for such a long time... well done!
Ninety minutes after they started playing, it was over. Not that long, but everybody seemed satisfied and so was I. I like to listen to the albums of CF, but live they were even better, and I’m glad I had the chance to be there. On their site they describe the music as “some of the most powerful and challenging music of the late 20th century”, they are described as innovative, avant-garde, brave, brutal, bizarre, electrifying and unique. Well, they’re right! (Review & Pics: Romana Pavesi) |
