Since a couple of months the Nijmegen based FortaRock organizes metal evenings at Doornroosje. After a very successful opening night with Another Messiah and Textures in August (the house was packed), two less famed bands were brought to Nijmegen: the Dutch Transmission 0 and the Italian Ephel Duath Personally I had never heard of these bands before. The first impression that Transmission 0 made on me was a positive one. They are not the standard black dressed, longhaired metal musicians I for one had expected. The fact that their front man plays keyboards and also is responsible for the vocals was something gave away some of what was to come. Transmission 0 plays metal with a progressive and at times very melodic base. The guitars were pretty basic; I particularly liked the interaction between drums and keyboards. Clever drums of original keys marked the breaks between the more metal and the more melodic parts of each song with. This way the band kept my attention through out the set.

The first thing I noticed when Ephel Duath entered the stage, was the way that bass player Fabio carried his instrument: just beneath his armpit. This is usually a sign of a technically schooled musician. All other band members made the same impression. Never before had I seen a drummer carrying sheet music! This looked more than promising for the set.
After just a few notes all the people were convinced that this was going to be a night to remember. I for one was simply blown away by the craftsmanship of the musicians, their enthusiasm and their joy for their music. This joy was shared with the crowd from minute one. The very appealing mix of laid back jazz, psychedelic parts, technical metal and harsh vocals hit me straight in the face. I wasn’t even bothered by the mad screaming of ‘vocalist’ Luciano. Man, I never knew that watching a gig could be so much fun! I just couldn’t believe what I was hearing! These Italians bring a madness to metal that made almost everybody excited. Ephel Duath is an incredible experience!
