About ten years ago I listened to bands like NOFX, Mighty Mighty Bosstones and a lot of other punk bands that are heavily influenced by ska. This night was a very special night because the founders of ska music were playing in Doornroosje (Nijmegen, The Netherlands). The band that created this genre is called The Ska-Talites and it was a fun evening while there was no metal or rock riff all night long.

The venue was already sold out a few weeks before this concert, so I was one of the lucky ones to visit the show. For me it was a whole new experience to go to this kind of concert. I visited their show, because of the influence The Ska-Talites have on music nowadays.
A short introduction about this band is an important thing for all the rock and metal people who visit this site. The Ska-Talites started in the year 1964. In that year my dad was 14 years old, so that’s way back. The Ska-Talites recorded their first LP in the legendary Studio One in Kingston, Jamaica; the place where ska was created.
More than 40 years later the band still exists and with only three original member they are doing a big European tour, and this night they were playing in Nijmegen, The Netherlands. As you may expect from some 70 years old Jamaicans the concert started one hour late. But there was a nice vibe in the venue, and some ska music being played to warm up the place and the visitors.
The band started and everybody in the crowd loved it from the start. The whole venue was dancing on the beats of the drum and the happy sound of the saxophone, trumpet and trombone. One person of this legendary society was laughing from the beginning till the end of the show. He was just enjoying his bandmates and some times he played some tunes on his saxophone. Looking how much fun those people had on stage was one of the highlights I had, some man who could be my grandpa was dancing and jumping on stage and the band sure looked like they were having a lot of fun.
I don’t know any Ska-Talites songs, but there were a lot of tunes I know from something and the reactions from the crowd were very good, so I assume the band played a lot of classics.

I loved The Ska-Talites and I’m very happy that I saw the godfathers of ska. It was very nice to see where some of my (former) favourite bands got their influences. Seeing this band is good for everybody. Also for all the metalheads who only come to dark, filthy places.
