Tonight I was supposed to be at the Gelredome stadium, checking out an amazing concert by Guns ‘n Roses. However, the band had cancelled their entire European tour three weeks earlier, so no Axl & co this winter. Fortunately, there was a great alternative: a Devin Townsend/ Strapping Young Lad – gig. So, to the Effenaar we went! Openers tonight were Godflesh, who also supported Fear Factory on their European tour, just as Devin did. Godflesh are amongst the first industrial metal bands, starting back in the eighties, and they still kick ass! They don’t even need lots of sampling, DJ’s or other fancy stuff, just grinding guitars, grooving bass-lines, thumping drums and a throat like a chainsaw! Their set consisted of both old and new songs, blending together smoothly into 45 minutes of melodic noise. Heavy as fuck, but very good! Devin headlined tonight’s show, so more time for more songs! Although Devin told me that this tour would consist of a lot more of his solo-work (a huge dose of Terria included), he apparently changed his mind, ‘cause there was a lot of Strapping material blasting out of the speakers! Now I don’t have a problem with that, but since this was also the case with his last tour, I was hoping for some songs hardly ever performs live. On the other hand, with songs like ‘Bad Devil’, ’Earth Day’, ‘War’ and a bunch of other great heavy hitters, you can’t possibly not be enjoying yourself! Besides, it is rumored that Devin is putting together another band to play his more progressive and mellow works on stage; so perhaps next tour will feature more of that gem called Terria.
