On this 7th Roadburn festival we were promised some of the finest artists from the doom/stoner genre. And the high hopes were fullfilled with Terra Firma, Atomic Bitchwax and the Masters of Reality. The shows were backed by aptly chosen video projections on 3 screens. Plus all the shows were live broadcasted via the internet by the VPRO program 3voor12. The webcasts are still available, go to the Roadburn site for the links. Terra Firma First on the bill were Swedish doom rockers Terra Firma. At that time (20:00 hours) there weren’t that many people present. With the songs of both their albums they had trouble to convince the attendees. Only towards the end of their set there seemed to be some sparks but the overall show was a bit lame. At least there was some distraction by the video material (taken from the 1930’s movie “Hexen”) which was cool. And very strange. Atomic Bitchwax The sound was very heavy and very loud so just what one wants for a band like this. They also played songs from their 2 albums like “Red Hot”, “Crazee Fandango”, “Pest” and the Atomic Rooster cover “Play the Game”. All this was accompanied with psychedelic and outerspace footage (by VJ Xander77). Atomic Bitchwax played tight and with enthusiasm, best showed by drummer Keith Ackerman who must have been Animal from the Muppets in a previous live. The guys showed their true spirit by selling their own merchandise and taking all the time to talk to the fans and autograph stuff. Very nice thing to do and rarely seen these days. Respect! Masters of Reality They started of with some songs of the new album (the title track “Deep in the hole” and “Third man on the Moon”). Like at the Atomic Bitchwax the sound was pure, loud and heavy. Very much OK!!! The whole show was an arrangement of all the Master’s “hits” and they hit hard. We were treated by the likes of “Doraldina’s Prophecies”, “Alder Smoke Blues”, “Time to Burn”, “Why the Fly” and of course “She got me (when she got her dress on)”. After the break were kicked out with “John Brown”. With 90 minutes this was rather a short set but then again I would have settled for 30 minutes because that’s even better than no Masters of Reality at all ! ! !
