About a thousand people gathered in De Melkweg Amsterdam. All there with a dying hunger for something new…. Dälek Appetizer for tonight is Dälek. Never heard of them? I’m not sure if you ever will! Their music is a combination of hip/hop, rap and some electro sounds. The band consists of 3 guys, one behind synthesisers, one behind turntables and one man that does all the rap. Personally I wasn’t that impressed and considered this band a strange support act for Tomahawk. But with a person like Mike Patton you’re never sure what might come next….. Tomahawk He entered the stage in a black uniform and saluted us all, hiding himself behind his synthesizers and other noise creating instruments. But the moment the music starts you know it, this is once again something unique and brilliant! Tomahawk is a project of Mike Patton and guitarist Denison (The Jesus Lizard) . Together they recruited John Stanier (Helmet) for drums and Kevin Ruthmanis (Melvins) for bass. As you can see not some new kids on the block! And now they share one stage, all dressed up in some uniform style, to create music that can only come from a real sick mind. Maybe it’s best described as something in between some old Faith No More work and some real freaky noise electro sound. Mike Patton uses his voice not for singing but also as an instrument that he combines with soundscapes. Still don’t get it? Hell, just try to buy his album and see(k) for yourself! Which is, by the way, not an easy job. I’ve searched high and low for a Tomahawk album but I simply can’t find it! So it wasn’t easy to tell you what Tomahawk played tonight…. But don’t be disappointed ‘cause with some good old fashion charm I was able to get my hands on the play list! So here are some highlights : “Flashback”, “101 North”, “Sir Yes Sir”, “Bird” plus the encores “God hates a coward” and ” Point and Click”. And while the audience was begging for more the show stopped. Okay, maybe it was after 75 minutes of playing, but I just couldn’t get enough! In a word this is another well succeeded experiment by the hand of Mr. Patton. The only thing I truly dislike about him is the fact that he always calls the guys (his fans) in the audience gay. Next time I’ll see him, I’ll call him a faget….
