As REZ enters the Melkweg, we find out that tonight`s support-act Vega4 performs in the small hall at the Melkweg complex. The Nickelback management overruled everything (including the guestlist) and didn`t want Vega4 to play on the same stage in the main hall as them. This means that you have to walk from one hall to the other to watch both bands. Pretty silly, huh? Vega4 Due to the inconvenience concerning the guestlist REZ only saw two songs (of their new album `Satellites`) from the Vega4 gig, which sounded a lot like the recent Radiohead stuff. A real shame that Vega4 and the magazines were treated this way. Nickelback With a superb sound (the guitars sound like James Hetfield at the best Metallica shows, JG) frontman Chad Kroeger and his men give us `Woke Up This Morning` to begin with. Fair is fair, this band does know how to rock. The performance (both musically and the vocals) is more than okay, while the lights are also pretty impressive. The Canadian guys obviously play a lot of stuff from their very successful latest album, but also a few songs from the previous records `The State` and `Curb`. The old `One Last Run` next to the upcoming single `Too Bad` followed by `Breathe`, `Cowboy Hat` and `Hollywood`. It all sounds very tight and mature. Nickelback is a band that can be listened to by anybody who loves rock and grunge music. They have obvious influences of such bands like Creed, Foo Fighters, Led Zeppelin and even Silverchair. The Kroeger brothers (bassplayer Mike his last name is Kroeger, JG) started up the band in 1996 and are truly enjoying themselves tonight at the Melkweg. Guitarist Ryan Peake proves to be quite a good singer as well, as he supports Chad in several songs. Other cool tunes are `Hangnail`, `Worthy To Say`, `Never Again` and `Leader Of Men`. The band also plays two new songs and especially the first one (both tracks don`t have titles yet, JG) is major hit material. After 50 (!) minutes, the band leaves the stage only to return one time to do an encore. "This Is How You Remind Me" is the last song from tonight. No real surprises there. First we get an acoustic part and then the entire version with electric guitars. Of course everybody sings along with this worldwide hit-single and so this gig comes to an end in a positive way. Nickelback does know how to write quality 3,5 minutes rock songs, that`s a fact. They`ll surely have some more huge hits in the near future. Maybe it`s a good idea to aim for some changes in the management team as well? (All photo`s are of Nickelback)
