Both Electric Wizard and Warhorse had to cancel their European tour. EW because the release of the new album was postponed and Warhorse because guitarist Todd Laskowski had left the band. By the time Electric Wizard`s Let Us Prey was released Laskowski had returned to Warhorse and the ultra heavy package was on again.

Warhorse
Starting off with Every Flower Dies No Matter The Thorns (Wither), Warhorse made clear what they’re about. Crushing doom with a lot of dynamics. Calm and reserved parts are followed by bursts of earthshaking heaviness. Jerry Orne`s low grunting vocals fit in really well with slow riff-based music. The riffs are catchy enough to make up for the lack of melody in the vocals. Their latest full-length album As Heaven Turns To Ash has a great sound. Clear and heavy.

I had been wondering whether they could reproduce that live. The guitar sound is a bit blurry but overall they get close enough to the album. And that`s not easy with such down-tuned instruments. Although Warhorse isn`t very well known (yet!) there were a couple of people that yelled some requests. Much to the surprise of the band members themselves.

Despite the low tempo of the music the band were pretty active on stage. Especially Mike Hubbard looked very impressive, as he is a very expressive drummer. During the calmer parts both guitar and bass enhanced the hypnotizing riffs with psychedelic effects and thus built up to the mind-blowing climaxes. Next year a headline tour please; because the crowd really wanted an encore.

Electric Wizard
These English Doomsters have always had a drug image. They ruined gigs because they were too high. Especially drummer Mark Greening is known for getting just a little too high before a gig. This tour it`s going to be different, singer/guitarist Jus Oburn announced in an interview with Rockezine. And it is.

Tonight they`re tighter than I`ve ever seen them and it`s just the beginning of the tour. Although the band doesn`t have the bravoure their support act has they do get the crowd going as well. Nodding and banging heads all around.

Oburn doesn`t use the effects on his voice he uses on the album, which I think is a good thing. He`s got a good voice and really doesn`t need those effects. Greening does play pretty tight but he only plays three different sorts of fills. A bit too much of the same. As a total the band does rock hard though. Again the sound is very good. The long songs with repetitive riffs work like a candle on moths. Hypnotizing and addictive like drugs.

What a great evening of total, crushing, earth shattering doom!
