A nice way to spend the Friday night is to see a black metal band. And by chance there was a concert in Genesis, a rock-cellar in Nijmegen. On Friday, the 10th of May, Negationist would present their latest release ‘In seas of blasphemy’. Their support act should be Devious, but this appearance was cancelled. The guitars of this band were stolen out of their car. May the thieves burn in Hell for all eternity.

Negationist
Only Negationist was left and they played for quit a long time. The following songs were represented: In seas of blasphemy, Into dark dimensions, Entrapped in deceit, Embraced by darkness, Soul Assassin, Lethal, Satanic victory, Eternal damnation, Filled with flames and Worship the beauty of death.

Their appearance passed off not very smoothly; there were a lot of things that went wrong. In the beginning of the concert one of the guitars failed, due to a broken guitar cord. Later on, they blew up their vocal amplifier. Due to that, we had to listen to the last song without vocal support.

After all, I must admit that they dealt very well with the problems. They continued the show no matter what, and that is the way one should handle those problems. (Not the way Cradle of Filth reacted on Graspop, with swearing and so on). This testifies of a professional attitude.

The music that negationist produced was aggressive and extreme black metal, with influences from death and thrash. I really liked the way they used vocals with backing vocals. It sounded really aggressive and it was very nice to look at. This was especially well done in the song ‘In seas of blasphemy’, which I think is one of the best songs on their latest MCD ‘In seas of blasphemy’. Their drummer also did quit a good job; he even played with one drumstick when he lost the other.

There was not much response from the audience, maybe because they presented themselves not defiant enough. But as always there must be a certain interaction between the band and the audience, maybe I missed that aspect.

When I look back at the concert I think there are many thing that must be enhanced, but eventually Negationist will bear the fruits of their effort.
