| Flaw |
| with Chris Volz on Jul 12, 2002 |
|
In 2001, Flaw released their debut album Through The Eyes, filled with heavy yet emotional songs and very personal lyrics. The album was produced by David Bottrill, who also produced Tool’s Ænima. I had the chance to ask the band a few questions via email, singer Chris Volz had (apparently only) a couple of minutes to answer them.
| Why is your band called Flaw? Because most of humanity by nature is flawed, and I think music should influence life, as we try to do. | |||
| Through The Eyes is your debut album in this lineup. Did you play in other bands before Flaw?
Yes, a few here and there, nothing significant. It was all a building process.
| A few weeks ago I checked the biography on your website and read that Jason had left the band due to creative and personal differences. Just now I checked it again and I noticed Jason’s picture and name are back on the website. What happened?
Jay is not back and he did leave for musical and personal differences. [Jason’s name and picture have been taken off the website again – NW]
| How did you get in touch with David Bottrill and what was it like working with him? Are you satisfied with the result? David was incredible, we learned so much from him. We sent him a demo after being signed and he liked it. So we were honored to work with him. | |||
| Who do you listen to yourselves and/or who would you say are your main influences?
We all have a wide variety of influences from Sabbath to Alice in Chains, to Pink Floyd to Deftones, Tool, etc.
| What do you like most and least about being in a band?
It is a dream come true, but it`s a little hard getting used to the whole business side of things. I can`t complain though.
| What do you do in your spare time?
Play X-Box, exercise, write new shit, meet new people.
| I understand you’re from Kentucky. What’s the music scene like over there?
Louisville, KY has a good budding scene, a lot of good mixtures and a lot of original stuff.
| Why do you thank Hunter S. Thompson [author of Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, amongst others] and Maynard James Keenan [singer of Tool] in the booklet?
I respect them both for their writing ability and willingness to explore life.
| Last but not least: any plans for a European tour?
We hope to get back overseas ASAP but we`re focusing on the US Ozzfest right now.
