Dance On Glass
with Ania Blomberg on Aug 21, 2002

The Castle Party in Bolkow, Poland (click here to read the Rockezine review of the Castle Party) was good for meeting new bands. The English/ Polish DANCE ON GLASS was one of those bands. The band is currently working on their first full-length album due to be released later this year. Dave Blomberg (also known from New Model Army and Nozzle) and Ania Blomberg (ex-Batalion d’Amour) are the people behind this band. Ania gave all the answers…

How was this year’s Castle Party for you?
It was great. Although we had to play in the early evening, with sun still shining on our faces, we enjoyed it very much. It was all very hectic, because we started rehearsing with the full lineup just a week before (we were playing with Polish musicians). However, the gig was well received by the audience and music press, so it was all worth the hassle and stress!

You were not only playing as a band member on the Castle Party, but you had a job in the organisation as well. How did you get involved in that?
I used to play at the Castle Party every year with my last band, Batalion d’Amour. Therefore, I know the festival very well. Also, I’m a freelance journalist (for Metal Hammer) and I used to work in a promotion department of Metal Mind Records, so I have many contacts in the music industry, which made my job as a media coordinator for Castle Party much easier.

When did you decide to make DANCE ON GLASS a real band instead of the studio project it apparently was?
It is still mostly a studio project. We are using a real band for gigs, but Dance On Glass is still Dave Blomberg and myself – we are composing the music and working on arrangements and lyrics.

“Dance on glass” sounds like a pretty painful experience. Is the name of the band an indication of what you’re singing about?
Yes, definitely. The lyrics are quite dark, emotional and personal.. They aren’t that different from my writing for Batalion d’Amour.

How have the reactions on your EP Not Yet been so far?
We were recently offered a deal with Metal Mind Records – the first album is due to be released in November. We have started to build a fanbase and got a few good reviews from the music press.

You are currently working on some new material; what can we expect?
Dark, electronic music with a heavy guitar edge… Therefore, nothing has really changed since our EP.

You are living in the U.K. now, but you’re originally from Poland. How do you see the alternative/gothic scene in Poland? And what are the main differences between Poland and the U.K., according to you?
In my opinion, the Polish Goth scene is much better organised than the English one. And more into traditional Goth music. In the UK Goths are more into electro/techno than guitar based gothic music.

What can we expect of DANCE ON GLASS in the future?
We are going to play a tour in Poland in November, together with few other Polish bands. And a tour in Germany early next year is being planned, as are few festivals…

Something you always wanted to say, but never have been asked…
This is the most difficult question of all. OK, I would love to go on tour with Depeche Mode… But – do they still exist??? Dark regards to all Goths in The Netherlands!!! Have a look at our official website, http://danceonglass.topcities.com. It is still very modest, but we are slowly improving it!
