Autumn Clan surprised us with their melancholic rock album ”Requiem To The Sun”. Mexx found time to introduce us into the world of the Autumn Clan…

Can you tell us something more about the history of AUTUMN CLAN?
Autumn Clan was founded on the 30th September 1997. From the four original founding members only Jens and Franky are left. 1998 Gabriel joined the clan on bass guitar and in March 2001 the original drummer left the band. After that, the band did a lot of song writing with a drum computer. Some of those songs can be found on the second demo release “2001 – above us endless space”.

I joined the band in May 2001. Only 3 months later we played our first gig together and that was the point, where Autumn Clan changed. Many gigs followed and during this time we got a in touch with a record-label. In January 2002 we signed a deal with “WAB-records”, a new Austrian label (division of “Napalm Records”). In March we recorded the debut-CD “Requiem To The Sun” at Boom Room studios with producer Boban Milunovic (Belphegor, Jack Frost, Evenfall)
Now we’re promoting “R.T.T.S.” with playing gigs all over Austria. We’ve also started to write new songs for our next album, which will be recorded in spring, and released in autumn next year. This is where Autumn Clan is now.

Why did you choose the name AUTUMN CLAN?
The word “autumn” stands for our favourite season in which everything began. “Clan” is a big family, and this is, what we feel like when we are on stage and play our gigs for the clan members in front of it. Our fans all over the world and we are the clan.

Your first song is ‘New Gothicism’, but your music sounds more like a mixture between End Of Green and Life Of Agony (during “Ugly”). How do you feel about this? Do you see your music as Gothic rock?
We don’t even think about what kind of music we play. Other people shall do this! Let the people define and decide.

Can you tell me more about the lyrics on “Requiem To The Sun”? Do you see your music as depressive or melancholic? Why?
I don’t think that “depressive” is the right word to explain our music. It is more a part of the “going down and coming up” feeling we try to catch in the songs. When something goes wrong, after that, there is always a “coming up”. But the main thing we write about is the feeling before the “coming up”.

I have to admit that I’m pretty surprised that Austria has some good melancholic rock bands (also Jack Frost). Is there a good environment for rock bands in Austria? Do you have a lot of opportunity to play? Radio stations and so on…
We have a few radio stations that play our music in a kind of “Head Bangers Ball” shows, but we think that we have much more airplay in other countries. The opportunity to play is the most important thing. We played a lot of gigs in Austria and there are a lot of good bands in Austria, trying to escape the stress of “business as usual” with their music.

  What bands influenced you?
There are a lot of bands of all metal-genres that influenced us, but as you can hear we’ve got our own style I guess. To name them all would take too much time and paper (or place on the screen).

I saw you have a pretty long list of gigs in the near future, but I miss one country (my own): the Netherlands. Or do you have any good news for us? Or do we have to go to Belgium?
Yeah! 4 years ago we played a gig in Belgium … We try to set up a tour but first of all we need a good booking/tour-agency. We are applying for huge European festivals – maybe we’ll see you on Dynamo …

What can people expect when they go out and see AUTUMN CLAN perform?
Prepare for the force of nature in all shapes you can think of! Together with the audience we fall into trance and get on a trip. You can dance, you can sing, you can mosh around, but you better close your eyes and take a deep breath, while listening …

How are the reactions so far on “Requiem To The Sun”?
Quite positive! Most of the people like it, because it brings something new into this genre. I think, people like us because of Jens’s voice, no growls and things like that. We don’t use keyboards or female voices and no overloaded effects. There are a lot of records on which you can hear stuff like that, almost too many! We don’t want to do what thousands of other bands are doing.

What’s the best possible scenario for AUTUMN CLAN according to you? Where do you want to go with this band?
We will know much more after the second release. We love Autumn Clan and we want to lead it to the biggest possible success.

Something you never was asked, but always wanted to say…
Join the Autumn Clan!!

Thanks to all the “Clan members” out there for their believe and support!
