One of Hammerheart`s new signings this year is the "new" Swedish death metal band Throneaeon. New because of the fact that "Neither of Gods" probably will be the first thing they have ever heard from these Swedes. But Throneaeon has been spreading their antichrist message ever since the beginning of the nineties. In the meantime they recorded several demos like "Carnage" and a MCD "With Sardonic Wrath" which were pretty well received in the (Scandinavian) underground. Besides that Throneaeon played many live shows with some great bands as Napalm Death, The Haunted, The Crown, Entombed, Vomitory, Dark Funeral and many more. And now their first official full-length release "Neither of Gods" on which the band plays a combination of American orientated death and thrash metal. Clearly influenced by bands as Deicide and Cannibal Corpse Throneaeon seems ready to conquer some more recognition for their hard work all these years. Vocalist / Guitarist Tony Freed was available to tell us all we need to know about his band.
| Throneaeon, it certainly is a damned awful way to torture the reviewers. Can you tell me how you guys came up with this name and does it have a deeper meaning? Oh, I am glad to hear that people get tortured just by pronouncing our name… Yes, it surely means something more to us. Check out the lyrics for "Strength of the flesh" and you will probably find it out. I now that when we were trying to find a name for the band we wanted it to mean something more than just brutality. The name is simply the two words Throne and Aeon connected. So to pronounce it you just say these two word; Throne aeon [ion]. Does that make it any easier? | |||
| Can you tell me something about the history of the band for the people that do not know Throneaeon? The history begins in 1991 when our drummer Roger Sundquist were, I think you can say, forced by his brother, me, to start a rock band. In -92 I forced myself into this band due to the fact that they sucked big time. I thought they needed a person like me to get this band somewhere so what else could he do? In -94 14 or 15 individuals had come and left the band (people don`t understand what`s best for them). Lucky as I was back then two strange people from the country went down to our rehearsal and wanted to try. -Sure go ahead and show me what you think you are, I said. Truth was that these guys impressed. Andreas Dahlström, bass and Göran Eriksson guitar, really wanted the same thing as my brother and I... | |||
| In -95 our first demo, Demo -95, was released and gave us a record deal on the Swedish label V.O.D. Due to several reasons this record was put on ice by ourselves and later became our second demo-tape "Carnage". In -98 the Danish label Helgrind records released our first real recording, the mcd "With sardonic wrath". This mcd gained only good reviews and finally we got back to a label that earlier had shown interest in Throneaeon, namely Hammerheart records. Now we`re back on track and will be nailing Christ to the cross…again!! Our new opus is entitled "Neither of gods" and will be in the stores on the 6th of august. | |||
| Congratulations with the new release. I think it sounds great. Are you guys satisfied with the result and can you tell me how it was recorded (for the recording freaks amongst us)? Thank you for those kind words. At first I was not satisfied at all…I said to the others that I would quit, take my life, smash someone`s face in and all that stuff that I usually do to when I´m down, but day by day my feelings grow for this recording, so, yes, I`m satisfied. Very satisfied actually. We have used the same studio, Studio Underground, as we did for "With sardonic wrath" but with a better result according to my opinion. Details are just boring. One instrument at the time, beginning with drums. | |||
| You guys certainly do not sound as a regular Swedish band at this moment. Can you tell me something about the band`s influences? I`m sure that everything I listen to influences my way to write music. Deicide has been one of our main influences from the beginning, but today I listen to all kinds of music, mostly metal though. Some of my favorite bands are, Immortal, Dark Angel, Morbid Angel, Deicide, Depeche Mode, early Motley Crue, Judas Priest, Papa Roach, Korn, early Entombed and Carcass etc. | |||
| How can you cope up with critics as a combination between Deicide and Cannibal Corpse and how would you describe your style otherwise?
We have no problem with that. They are two great bands, even though I would not mention Cannibal Corpse as an influence of Throneaeon. We would just say death-metal from Sweden with a touch of the Florida sound.
| Is there some kind of concept or a deeper thought behind "Neither of Gods"? Yes, of course. Everything we do with Throneaeon is a statement. "Neither of gods" symbolizes the statement against our Christian politics and the Christian society that have fucked us up totally during these last years. | |||
| Can you tell me how Throneaeon composes their songs? After my family has gone to bed I grab my guitar and a bottle of tequila and just let my fingers take a tone and another and another…and there you`ve got it. | |||
| How would you describe the metal scene in Sweden nowadays. I can imagine that everybody wants to sound as the new Soilwork, Darkane or The Crown at the moment? I would describe it as both good and bad. Today it seems that we`ve got a good mixture of bands. Everything from neo-metal, thrash, melodic to death metal, so it doesn`t feel like anything is directly a hype. And we`re also talking good quality bands. This, I think, gives Sweden its great variety. The audience is still pretty lazy, and that`s sad. | |||
| Can we expect Throneaeon in Europe any time soon? Hopefully…We are nearer now than we have ever been. We are now in contact with five or six organizers, apart from our label, which wants us to play in Europe. Maybe we`ll be there in October, so keep your eyes open. | |||
| Any plans for the future?
Our plans are to keep up our work with Throneaeon, and do everything to be able to go out on tour across Europe and Scandinavia and meet you guys on the road. Some new shirts will soon be printed and for sale plus a video is also planned, but we`ll see about that. Our plans are also to be in the studio at the end of next summer to record our next full-length album for Hammerheart. We have a few songs finished and will be working with writing more material until it`s time.
| How can we get Throneaeon`s previous releases? You can order the "Carnage" demo tape directly through us for us$6 in Europe and us$7 worldwide. We also have the mini-cd "With Sardonic Wrath" for sale at us$10 (Europe) us$12 (worldwide). All prices include p&p.
