The second album of French gore grinders Sublime Cadaveric Decomposition, simply entitled II, was very enjoyable, but raised some questions. Fortunately Legacy was so kind to answer them. An interview with a remarkable French band, who don’t use any titles or lyrics at all… | |||
| Since you’re a relatively unknown band to most of our readers. Can you introduce the band to us and tell us a little about the history? The band is born many years ago in 1996, and since the beginning we are really influenced by all the extreme scenes and in particular by death metal and grind core bands. Sublime Cadaveric Decomposition made 3 split demo’s and did a lot of gigs and festivals between our start and 2001. The early years have permitted us to create our own style and to quickly grow up in the underground scene. In March 2001 we released our first full length CD on Bones Brigade. It made our first years of evolution concrete and gave us the opportunity to show what the band was able to do, in the underground as well as ‘above the ground’. We played the biggest European gigs and festivals (like the Fuck The Commerce Festival) with the greatest bands and we have reached more and more people this way. Two years separate the first album and the new album. During this time SCD continued its development and we took enough time to create more interesting, unusual and exciting songs. | |||
| I like your last album very much, can you tell us something about the writing and recording process? Thank you Sjoerd, this new album concludes two years of song writing cause we did a lot of gigs and tried to create a real evolution in our music, so we’re really happy now with all the positive reactions, you know!! Most of the time Bruno and Tristan, the two guitar players prepare song ideas and the writing process during rehearsals is team work. We all have the same state of mind, so the writing can be done quick, but we sometimes need a few weeks to finish a song to be totally satisfied! The recording process ended many months of preparation, a mixed moment of stress and fun! Step by step the band gains experience and the ability to achieve its goals. It might appear as a strict job but in reality we have a lot of fun and pleasure in each step of the creation, you know! I’m really satisfied with our new album and I’m sure people will like it. Right now I can’t wait to play gigs everywhere possible and to have some fun with all you guys!!!!!! | |||
| What are your main influences or bands you listen to mostly yourselves? We are influenced by all extreme scenes as I said in the beginning of this interview, and it’s probably true, you can find all this in our music. The two main influences of our band are the death metal and the grind core scene but we also listen to some crust, hardcore and other extreme stuff, you know! It’s sometimes really hard to know where the boundary between all these styles exactly lies, but one thing is sure our music is made for extreme people!!! Bands who probably had the most influence for myself are: Terrorizer, Gut, Death, Cerebral Turbulency, C.B.T., Brutal Truth, Napalm Death, Cannibal Corpse, Catasexual Urge Motivation, Brujeria, Carcass, Suffocation, Disrupt, Bile, Dead Infection, Morbid Angel, Immolation, …….. | |||
| Since I have never heard your debut album can you tell us and maybe explain some of the main differences between the two albums? We did our best during the first 5 years of the band in order to create our own identity, cause in my opinion, the most difficult thing for an extreme band is to find its own way and not just follow all the famous bands. I think our first CD has all the main characteristics and targets of SCD and I think this new album is in the same vein as our first one, but with a better sound and with more contrasted, unusual and expressive songs. We recorded in the same studio as the last time but with two big differences, more time and more money to do it, so we could do a better job, for sure!! I think the band gained more experience during the two years between the two albums and it gave us a fucking better result! We took time to write new really original songs and not just copy stuff of our debut! In my opinion our new album is better and I’m sure extreme fans who like our first CD will like the new one as well. Hopefully new bloody people will discover it and appreciate SCD! | |||
| You don’t use any album or song titles, can you tell us why not and what’s the idea behind this? Because I suspect you don’t have any lyrics at all! In case I’m wrong, what are the lyrics about? Yeah it’s true we never use lyrics, like Obituary or other bands, you know! We refuse to use our position to preach any message cause we believe everyone can make his own opinion and doesn’t need bands to make it for them. We don’t need fun or gory lyrics cause it’s, in our opinion, totally useless if not just stupid! But maybe it’s just cause we’re not able to create good lyrics! So, we choose to just share our state of mind with our music and our cover artwork!!!! On our new CD we chose to put the date of composition as title on the album: xx.01.02 means the song was written in January 2002! That’s the only useful information with a real relation to the song itself | |||
| In your biography Osmose claims you are determined “to create a total personal extreme musical way” May I ask in what way you are trying to reach that goal, what exactly are you trying to achieve and what makes you to strive for such a thing? There’re a lot of bands who just follow fashion and it’s fucking more difficult and interesting to try to find your own way, so since our start we tried to find our personal expression the extreme way! We are influenced by other bands but we refuse to try to sound like them. It’s hard to explain precisely but I think SCD found its own sound and image. Since our first CD I think we have found our path and now we just follow it and try to create as interesting as songs possible!!!!!! | |||
| Your first album was released on Bones Brigade, but now you are signed to Osmose (just like Inhume). How did you get the deal with Osmose and are you satisfied with it until now? Nicolas of Bones Brigade has produced our first CD and some old split stuff, he is a good friend of us, he helped us in the very beginning when it was not easy to put money into our band, so I wish the best to this great producer and this cool man. SCD have grown very quickly and it was not easy for a young label to grow that quick as well, so when we finished writing our second CD we took the decision with Nicolas to sign to Osmose. It was not an easy decision, we have absolutely nothing against Bones Brigade but it was the only solution for our band in order to continue our evolution. I’m sure he understands our choice and it’s always a pleasure to talk to him and get his opinion and his feelings for SCD. Osmose give us the opportunity to have a better distribution and a better support for tours and gigs, particularly in Europe!!! Contact with Osmose was very easy cause all has been okayed in one day!! It’s our first album for Osmose so we are totally satisfied until now and I hope it will be a good co-operation till the end. | |||
| Do you guys have any tours planned? And what can we expect from an SCD gig? I presume that it will be a nice slaughtering! Sure, man! We put all our energy in making our gigs more violent than the album, and most of time people enjoy the gig and there’re a lot of slamming and stage diving! We don’t use fire and false blood on stage, just sweat and extreme energy!! I challenge you to test it!!!! We play the headliner slot during the last day of the “Maryland Death Festival” in Baltimore on May 25th and we’ll do a US tour with Brodequin for almost one month. I think it will be an amazing tour, called “Obscene Assault On America”. As soon as we return to Europe we start a series of gigs and festivals and some tours in Europe, we will try to play everywhere possible, so you can contact us and arrange dates! In the beginning of 2004 we will do a tour in Japan. We are now looking for others gigs and festivals all over the world!!! | |||
| Thank you very much for your time, and the last words (recommendation, worshipping, commandments, thank-you’s, …) are yours!! Thank you for this cool interview, and thanxxx to all the readers for their interest in our band. We know a lot of people support us over there since our start, so I want to sincerely thank you all, be sure we will never forget it! We are really happy to have the opportunity to do gigs everywhere, I’m sure you will like our new album and I’m impatient to see you at our gigs, so see you soon friends!!!!!!! Take care SEB. Thank you again Sjoerd, it was a pleasure to do this interview, please add our contacts, see you soon! | |||
