Hawthorne Heights
with Eron on Aug 02, 2004

Hawthorne Heights` album The Silence In Black And White is out for a while now. Time to ask drummer Eron a few questions. Find out why it`s important to change oil and take vitamins.
This is your first album. Please introduce the band to our European readers?
We`re Hawthorne Heights from Dayton, Ohio, USA. Our band is made up of JT Woodruff (vocals, guitar), Eron Bucciarelli (drums), Micah Carli (guitar), Casey Calvert (guitar, screams) and Matt Ridenour (bass, background vocals).

The band was formed in 2001: Tell us how it all started.
We started out as A DAY IN THE LIFE. We released an album and an EP with minimal success. After numerous member changes we decided it was best to change the name and start over. Hawthorne Heights was actually formed in June of 2003.

You credit bands like Led Zeppelin, Nirvana and Shades Apart as your influences. How much of their influence can be heard in your sound?
Tons can be heard, everything from our song structures to our melodies are influenced by those bands. My drumming in particular...I mix Dave Grohl and Johm Bonham into my own style. When I write a part I think about what they would do.

How does the writing process go? Who writes the music and lyrics in the band?
We all bring parts of songs to practice and we work as a group to make a song into something we all like. JT handles all of the lyrics.

About the new album: What is it about?
It`s about love over long distances, being happy but also being sad at the same time. Wanting something so bad and not being able to get it. Frustration.

The Silence In Black And White. What does the title of the album mean?
The title is about how sometimes the things you don`t say can have the most impact. Think passive resistance....more was accomplished by peace activists when they didn`t use violence than if they had.

The themes you raise are really serious and the songs are depressively charged. How do the lyrics come about? Is all this frustration, personal failure and growth, evolution a personal experience or is it inspired by someone or something else?
The themes definitely come from personal experiences, failures and frustrations.

What do you expect of this release and how is the album being received by the press, and fans so far?
We don`t really have any expectations for this album. We just want people to like it. It hasn`t been very well received by the press, but fans seem to be very into it, and that`s what we really focus on.

Having already done some tours, are there any funny stories from being on the road?
One our tour with Silverstein we got a hotel on the beach in Florida. We stayed up real late playing dodge ball in the pool. I`m surprised we didn`t get kicked out.

You are now preparing for the upcoming tour with Glasseater, do you have any special rules on how to survive touring?
Take vitamins so you don`t get sick...like I am right now. Get you vans oil changed frequently since its basically your home and you need it to work properly.

Any plans in visiting Europe soon?
We`d love to come to Europe. JT was born in Germany, but the rest of us have never been there so we can`t wait to come.

Last question: Do you consider luck to be an important factor in your business?
Definitely. Breaking into this industry is 1/3 hard work, 1/3 good songs and 1/3 luck. So it’s definitely a big part of it.

Anyway, thank you for the interview and good luck, guys!
Thank you for the interview!
