Scenteria
with Daniel Landin on Sep 30, 2004

Scenteria have just released their debut album Art Of Aggression. They call it ‘a melodic twist to thrash’. Of course, we asked them some questions to find out what they really mean by that and also about their first release and their plans for the future.
For starters, would you enlighten the readers of Rock-E-Zine about how your band started and took its first musical steps?
Niklas and Stefan wanted to start playing music again after having a break for a couple of years. They met me and Johan and we started to play together. After three months we recorded our first demo and have been playing ever since.

Niklas and Stefan have played together before and after that they started working on different projects for 6 or 7 years before they met again and started the band. Why did it take so long?
Because Niklas had moved away from Halmstad to work in Gothenburg, but when he returned home they met and started Scenteria.

What does the name of the band mean? How did it become?
The band name doesn’t mean a thing. It’s a fictional name and Niklas made it up. We thought it sounded good so we named the band SCENTERIA.

Is there any special message or ideology behind your music? What is it about? What would you like to express with your music?
It doesn’t have a deeper meaning; we play the music we like to play and the music we think sounds good.

Could you tell us about your debut album Art Of Aggression?
The album is our first album and it contains nine melodic thrash metal tracks. We recorded the album in our own studio and then we mixed it at Slaughterhouse studio.

Did making three different demos help during the recording process?
Yes it did, we used the same process when we recorded the album as we did when we recorded the demos.

Tell us what the lyrics on the album are about?
The lyrics are made by all of us, we all try to help. The lyrics can be strictly fictional or they can be really personal. It depends on who wrote them.

How do you write songs, is this a group effort or is someone at a point entering the rehearsal place with a complete song?
It’s mostly a group effort, someone brings a riff and we all help to build a song from it. Someone has an intro and someone has a chorus and then we change the riffs and try to make a song out of it.

Are there any bands that you would like to credit for how they have inspired you to create a similar type of music?
Most bands of the Swedish death and thrash scene. But we don’t try to copy other bands but if you here music you like, you can’t help but be influenced.

Critics call your music thrash metal. Do you agree? What bands would you consider to be the true originators of the whole thrash metal genre?
We agree, but I think we have a melodic twist to thrash. The bands have to be Testament, Slayer and Metallica to make a long list short.

Do you remember your first show? What was it like?
Yes, our first show was as support to Time Reguim at Diezel in Halmstad, we were really stressed out but it went as well as it possibly could have gone when you play your first show together.

Any plans for touring? How can we see you playing live?
We have a tour planned in Holland and Belgium in January next year. I’m afraid I don’t have any more details but we hope to be playing as many shows as we can; we really love to play live.

Thank you for the interview. And in the end would you like to add anything else for the Rock-E-Zine auditory?
Scenteria would like to thank you for the interview and we hope that you will check out Art Of Aggression and if we play live anywhere near you, please come and check us out.
