Dynamic Lights

Could you please give a brief introduction of the band?
Of course, Dynamic Lights were born in Pesaro (Italy) in 1997. The Line-up is: guitarist Marco Poderi, vocalist Matteo Infante, bass player Raffaele Mariotti, drummer Simone Del Pivo and keyboard player Giovanni Bedetti. Before Shape we released our EP "Resurrection" which was well accepted all over the world and prior to that we released a demo called “Night Lights”. We are pretty satisfied with the result of the Shape CD; it is exactly what we had in mind! We have great expectations for this year and hope to spread our music throughout the world and play as many gigs as possible to promote the album.

Could you give some insight in the writing process? Where does a song start and how do you develop an idea into a song?
Usually we never write a song deciding where it will go from its beginning. What I mean is that we always keep the flow and we try to let our feelings lead us in the writing process. Normally we start from something we have in mind, it could be an idea from any member of the band, then together we try to develop it, deciding what parts are better for the song and which parts are not, so we try to keep the song in the same emotion we are feeling at that moment. Each person is 100% part of the writing process.

Which of the tracks took most time writing and / or recording?
It’s really difficult to say, because every song is full of detail, at the same time each person took his time to compose. Probably I could say the longest songs took the most time but this is not necessarily true, because the short songs are complex also, and many aspects are involved, like sounds, mixing process, and single instrument sections.

What are your personal favorites on the album and of course why?
We really have no favorite songs, each one expresses different feelings and sensations to us, so it`s really difficult to make a comparison, and we love all of them equally. If I have to name one, I love the participation of Jamina in "In The Hands Of A Siren" for the melodies and all the vocal parts in general, but this doesn`t mean it is the best one on the album.

If I am correct then the album was recorded and mixed more than a year before its release. Why did this take so long and isn`t it strange to promote music you`ve probably written one and a half year ago? How did the band develop in between?
We don`t think it’s all that strange, it took time because of different reasons, but we are now completely satisfied with the result. Obviously we have begun to write new material, but we have used more of this time to prepare us for the live shows, so we can give our best on stage. We hope people feel the same vibrations live as when they are listening to our album. We`ve also been busy planning the promotion of Shape.

What is the biggest compliment you read concerning Dynamic Lights and what is the biggest bullocks?
We are happy of every compliment we have been given so far. Usually we are glad to know that people or reviewers listen to the album carefully and understand every shade of it. About bullocks, we haven`t received big ones; anyway we think they can be useful if they are constructive, to improve our music.

What are your expectations of the album? What albums sales are you hoping for?
The expectations we have are simply great. We hope the album will be well accepted by people and that our music will travel all around the world. DVS Records have given us this big opportunity and so far it has been working really well. We hope to have good album sales, but the most important thing is that people will appreciate our music, with the possibility to see us live.

How did you get in contact with DVS Records, did you have any other offerings on distribution deals?
We had different offerings, but after a few conversations with Rene, we both decided to work together for Shape, so we joined DVS Records. Before this all happened when we decided to send a cd to the ProgPower selections; Rene was familiar with Dynamic Lights and he was also one of the people who listened and selected the bands. He had a good impression of us, so he decided then to contact us and discuss DVS, that`s how it started.

Are you pleased with the input DVS gave you so far?
Yes as I said before, DVS Records are a really good label, who keep their focus on good music. It`s obvious that this is their main priority as they have not had so many releases this year. We think our music fits perfectly with their ideas, and so far all is going great.

I understand that Dynamic Lights have only played in their home country. This month you will be playing abroad for the first time. Are you excited, what are your expectations?
Yes we are really excited about the tour with Nightingale, and to play at this year’s ProgPower festival. We want to give 100% of ourselves on stage, for our friends in Denmark, Germany and Holland. It will be interesting to play abroad and meet different people. We hope that people will come to see us and will enjoy our music. We will be there to give the crowd our best show and a really good time.

Talking about Italy, can you tell us something about the progressive scene in that country? Does a band like yours get the opportunity to develop in your home country?
The Progressive scene is part of our musical roots; Italy has had such great progressive bands in the past, to name a few: PFM, AREA, Banco del Mutuo Soccorso. These bands are doing a great job all over the world, so we never thought Italy was lacking in successful bands of this genre. Italy was the last one on this genre. Regarding the current Progressive Metal scene, we think it is still growing with good bands like DGM, Exawatt, Empty Tremor, Mind Key and many more…

If you had to compare the music of Dynamic Lights with one of the beautiful Italian cities, which would you chose and why?
There are a lot of beautiful cities in Italy full of art and history, like: Firenze, Roma, Napoli and Venezia, but we think we are not able to say “the music of Dynamic Lights represents this city”. We hope Shape can describe different situations and people from all over the world!

Looking at your private CD collection, which album makes you blush in shame?
I have in my collection a “Take That” album (the boy band), but I don’t like it and I don’t know why it’s there! Marco Poderi, the guitar player, has the first album of Spice Girl and I think this is quite funny, but he has lost it! Maybe because he listened to it too much in his car…ah ah ah…
