| The first words are for you. Please introduce yourself and the band. Inner Surge is Bryan Sandau, Scott Taylor, Jim Fernandes and Steve Moore. I`m Steve and I sing for the band. We`ve been working on this current lineup since 2004 and we`re very happy as a band and as friends. | |||
| Can you tell me a bit about the history of “Inner Surge”? The band has existed in some form since 2001. I started writing for the project at that time. The first album was more of a demo recorded in a home studio. Some songs are better than others but it laid a groundwork for the project and started to get the name out there. "Matrika" was recorded in 2003 and released with bonus tracks in 2004 after I collaborated with Huckster Rayzor for "Bury the Evidence" and Textile Arcade for "Silencer". Shortly after the release, the new lineup was formed and Scott, Bryan and Jim became a big part of the writing process. I go tinto a lot of new music as well and the next album came out a lot more aggressive. The latest album is "Signals Screaming" and we ended up releasing it through the Canadian record label Cyclone Records (www.cyclonerecords.ca). Since the album we`ve been chosen for two movie soundtracks, the Polania Films movie "Cabras", and the Macabro Films movie "Amok!", both due for release in 2007. We`ve also been included in the Garry Sharpe-Young book "New Wave of American Heavy Metal". CD`s that have featured us include Convergence Party Recordings "Dismantle the Machinery"and Cyclone Record`s "Storm Warning: Volume 1". We`re currently getting set to film our 2nd music video with Free Zen Design. | |||
| Can you describe the type of music you play? Thought-out heavy music. It`s really some sort of rock music if you can allow yourself to lose the excessive terminology bands use these days. I would call it thought-out because we take a different approach than a lot of bands I hear. A lot of bands not only use the same chords and beats but choose the same generic themes in their lyrics, and it`s not something we`re interested in. We like hearing things we don`t hear on a bunch of other CD`s, so that`s usually what makes the cut when we`re putting things together. | |||
| What can we expect from “Inner Surge” in the near future? You can expect a lot more from us. We`re working on a video for our next single "Wolves", which we will be heavily promoting to radio and television come early 2007 when the video gets released. We`re also going to be on the movie soundtracks for "Cabras" and "Amok!" in 2007, and possibly some others. We`re always working with Cyclone Records on new opportunities as well. We`re writing our next album as well, and it will be recorded in 2007. Some live tracks may be released in the meantime along with a CD Extra or DVD release. You can keep posted at www.innersurge.com. | |||
| How do you promote the band? We try to reach out to independent thinkers. We`re doing very well as far as podcasts and internet radio are concerned, where the programmers choose the playlists themselves. We contact magazines and websites we think will be interested in what we`re doing. Mostly we try to find ways for people to find us. | |||
| What’s the main goal for “Inner Surge”? We have a few of them. The main one is to be heard by as many people as possible while maintaining complete musical integrity and standing behind every word we say and every note we play. We also want to fulfill the human need to do something positive in the world, however small it may be. Africa is an interest of our`s, as it is many people, and we will be raising funds for different initiatives there. We intend to speak out when we feel we have a grasp on the subject and it is an obvious issue without room for argument. But as the KKK and some politician`s will prove, there is always room for argument, even among issues that should not exist, such as gay rights, civil rights, seperation of church and state, global warming/etc. | |||
| Is there something I can wake you up for at night? There`s no emergency happening is there? Shucks, I thought the good old world was spinning around just fine and dandy. | |||
| What’s the best show you ever played? Warped Tour was a fun show to play, especially getting to briefly chat with Page Hamilton himself from Helmet, one of our favorite bands. The Southern Alberta Hardcore & Metal Festival was a good show as well. | |||
| Did you ever visit www.rockezine.com? If yes, what’s the best part and what’s the worst part of the site? The reviews are honest and to-the-point, and the site is a lot less convoluted than a lot of other music websites. It`s pretty easy to navigate. Most of all, you`re not snobs and are open to interviewing relatively new artists. | |||
| Do you have some famous last words for me and the readers? I`ll leave you with a bit of a quote that may show up on the next album, and it`s a potent phrase when you look at the United States right now and the Congress elections/wars. Sometimes it`s easy to wonder if there is enough critical mass, so to speak, to create lasting change in a racist and prejudiced environment. If so, we`ll need fighters popping up, and about 10,000 Malcolm X`s to straighten out the South. What we`ve seen so far should only be the cusp of the wave. The problem, to me, is in this line: "Tell a lie a million times and it becomes infallible."
