Katafalk
with Chris on Jan 06, 2007

Please introduce yourself and the band.
Hi, this is Chris, guitarist and founding member of KATAFALK (highly energetic death/black/thrash from Groningen, The Netherlands)

A few months ago Katafalk released a MCD called Death’s Contradiction. How where the reactions from the fans with this album?
Great! Although many were expecting a full-length. But as this EP is clocking over 20 minutes, it kept most of them satisfied yet craving for more. Awesome reviews in big magazines like Aardschok and Legacy, also.

What do you think is the best part of this MCD?
The sound, the songs, the guitar work. All of these surpassed our previous output (“Storm Of The Horde”, CBI 2003). Song wise, I think it’s the title track although everyone has his/her favourites.

Is there a certain message you’d like to pass on with your music? If so, what is it and why?
Musically it’s like “Bang your head and enjoy metal the way it’s supposed to be!”. Lyrically it could be “Fuck off, leave me alone and think for yourself” but that’s Wokkel (vocals) his territory.

What’s the main influence for Katafalk?
Metal. With capital M.

If you insist: 80’s thrash, Scandinavian death/black and old metal gods like Iron Maiden because they rule.

Can you describe the creative process of making this album? (How did the songs get written, arranged, produced, the lyrics. Who does what in the band?)
Wokkel wrote the lyrics, I wrote the songs. Guitar leads were shared by both Niels and me. Final arrangements are always worked out in the rehearsal space or studio with full approval of the rest of the band. All music was produced by our very selves. Recording, mixing and mastering took place at Jörg Uken’s Soundlodge studio’s, which by now got pretty well-known cause also God Dethroned recorded there lately.

Why did you release this album by yourself, wasn’t there a suitable label?
Labels merely want to release full-length albums. Since we recorded only four songs, this time we decided to release it ourselves as an EP. This way we could earn back some bucks too.

Where is Katafalk five years from now?
I sincerely do not have an idea. Probably in a bar drinking beer, hahaha. We didn’t write a masterplan for this band or whatsoever. It’s more like something we like to do anyway (and we’re probably good at doing it) getting out of control. Whoever is making metal music for any other reason than that is in for the wrong reason.

Katafalk members played in several TV commercials for Dutch television. How did they manage that?
Mind you, we’re famous! ;) We were approached by the TV guys and girls themselves. For those particular TV commercials they needed some long-haired metalheads that rocked hard. None of the other applicants rocked harder then we did, so we got the job. Not only once, but even twice as we did a good job the first time.
