From the north comes a new evil. Gorelord is both a mix between black, death and gore and outrates many of the albums in either of these genres that came out this year. Time for an interview with head huncho Frediablo!
| How strongly do you agree or disagree with the review I did of your album, and on what points? First of all, I would just like to say thanks for the 9.5 out of 10 you gave Gorelord, I certainly agree with that.. ha ha !!..no, seriously.. I don`t see Gorelord as black metal at all, in fact, I don`t care one bit about genres and what is this or that. I just create the music I wanna hear coming out of my speakers, and I`ve had people calling Gorelord Grindcore, Death Metal, Black Metal... I just call it music, although on the official Gorelord web site ( http://gorelord.isevil.org ) it says NecroDeath metal.. ha ha !!! .. My wife !??.. I guess you are refering to the Mistress Of The Dark?... If so, she is my girlfriend, and has been so for the past 8 years, but we are not marrid.. ha ha, that`s cool..mayby some day we will be? Emperor?.. well.. I don`t know about that.. I have never ever heard a whole Emperor song in my life, but that doesn`t mean that can`t make music that sometimes sounds like them or some other band or music... | |||
| I am in no way trying to be original or do something noone else has ever done before, I just create music that I enjoy listening to, and if others feel the same way about it, then that is great, and I couldn`t ask for more... but what pleases me to read, is that you have understood the main thing about Gorelord, which is the horror/film idea behind that drove me to do it in he first place.. I wanted to have the cover artwork done so that it looked like a gore/horror film with warnings and shit.. and also use samples in between songs to create a wholeness throughout the album... It`s all about gore and horror, and I probably know a hell of a lot more about film than I do music!.. but all in all, I think the review was killer, and I thank you once again for all the kind words. | |||
| You more or less did most of the instruments on the album. How did it came to be that you learned to play such a wide range of instruments? Well, I woudn`t actually call it a wide range of instruments. Guitar and bass is to me one instrument, but then again I play very simple and primitive, and a `real` guitarist or bass player would probably smack my head for stating such, but to me it`s the same... but I like the eletric guitar best.. tuned way fucking down with a lot of distortion !! I actually played the drums on the slow part at the end of Crushed Skull On Christian Shoulders, and I have been playing drums in bands before, but I am a vocalist and screamer in my heart. I am currently involved in 11 different bands/projects, and I mostly do vocals and guitar. As far as wanting to play another instrument.. well, I would like to become better at my drumming, but I have no drums, time or any real talent !!.. I would love to play the piano/keyboard though, and create music for horror films and sick shit, and I did take piano lessons when I was younger, but I guess the horror and Satan got the better of me. I am my own teacher though when it comes to learning an instrument. I have just picked up parts here and there, and besides, my Brother Fug (Wurdulak, Soul Forsaken) is a killer guitarist, and he has been a big influence on me. | |||
| What was the trigger for creating this "Gorelord" project and its music?
What was your initial goal, what did you want to create at first?
When I desided to do Gorelord, I had already been a fan of old horror and gore films as well as movies in general since I was 5 years old, and I just wanted to create something that reminded me of all these great horror films. Something extreme and bloody with a ten ton groove to it. I recorded demos each time I was visiting Fug, bacause he has his own studio called Pinhed Studio, and after 3 visits I had recorded 10 tracks of pure horror. By this time myself and Killjoy had become very good friends, and I sent him a copy of the Gorelord demo... he loved it, and we decided that Gorelord would be signed to his record label Baphomet Records.. but in the beginning I had no idea that Gorelord would become as big as it has, and I`m just happy to get a chance to show the world what I do, and what drives me.
| Growing up in Norway, how does that affect the music and lyrics? Which
bands have had a definite impact on your style?
Growing up in Norway hasn`t had much impact on me and the way I play or the lyrics I write. I get all my inspiration from horror films, smoking weed, drinking Whiskey and being by myself. My world consists of Horror, my girlfriend, my friends, the alcohol and the music... that`s it !!, and Norway is nothing but a shithole anyway... cold and full of conservative christian peckerheads obsessed by money and trends !! I stick to my own, sit back and watch the rest of the world slowly destroy itself with money, fashion and media. It`s all gore and horror for me!!.. but as far as musical influences goes, I would have to say that Necrophagia is the biggest. I don`t listen to many bands, and when you say Impetigo and Behemoth, I have no idea what you are talking about!! My favourite bands are probably Pantera and Brujeria, and I don`t listen to much, close to any black metal at all, and I don`t consider myself a part of any musical environment either. I am a loner, and I do things my way. I don`t care what probably the main drive behind the Gorelord.. determination and being myself no matter what.
| Lyrically, I am reminded of the old death garde such as Impetigo and
Cannibal Corpse but also of the Italian horror flicks. Which were a greater
influence, music or movies? The greatest influence is movies for sure!! Like I said, I don`t listen to much music, but I do watch a lot of films, and that is what Gorelord is all about., and I would say Lucio Fulci`s `Zombie Flesh Eaters` and Ruggero Deadato`s `Cannibal Holocaust`, would great movies to accompany Gorelord, because the lyrical content of Gorelord is very much inspired from those movies and movies like them, and I believe it would look bad ass to to see Zombies and Cannibals mutilating human bodies to songs such as Force Fed On Human Flesh, and Maggots Impaled..ha ha !!! I am planning on doing a video/short film for Gorelord, so in that way Gorelord will become the perfect accompany for my own little chamber of horror.
| How did you ever befriend Killjoy, and how easy was it to get a slot on his
label roster? How actively did he support the album, and how is the label
to you promotionwise? I first came in contact with Killjoy in 1999. The reason for this was that myself and a friend of mine named Stian Stenersen, had made a 30 min long Blood and Gore extravaganza titled `Butcher Bob`, and I already knew that Killjoy were a huge fan of underground horror, so I contacted him by email, asking him if he would be interested in a copy of Buther Bob. He said yes, and we have been best friends ever since. Him and I have the same visions and ideas on most of things... like him and myself say `we are one`, and that is not far from the truth. We are two fucking insane gore and horror fans who also share the passion for extreme music, and like I said earlier, there was no problem at all to get Gorelord on his label roster, and he has been the one that has supported the album more than anyone + he also produced the album. He has done a great job in promoting it, and him and Phil has landed a distribution deal with Relapse, so I am in the best of hands for sure.
| What are you planning to do with Gorelord in the future? Is playing live an
option, as you would have to use session players? Playing live is definately an option. In case of a tour, I would have to bring session players, but that is already taken care of, so that`s no problem. I would love to perform live with Gorelord, and I know it would become a very intense and brutal liveshow. This music is meant to be played live, and I think people would get into it like a motherfuck !! As for the certain plans ahead, I can tell you right now that the next Gorelord album will be recorded February 2002, and that it will take the sound and the brutality 10 bloody steps further than Force Fed On Human Flesh. The working title for it is `Zombie Suicide Part 666`, and it will be the bloodiest record ever made !!! Cheers and Hail The Gore and Horror.
