Just a singer and an acoustic guitar, that’s all. All you need to know, really, because that’s all there is to this album. Simultaneously with the release of the new Throwing Muses album, singer Kristin Hersch releases a solo album. According to the added info, this was done on purpose. Not only because Kristin did not want one album to have to wait for the other, but also because of the direct relationship between the two. Recorded almost at the same time and under the same circumstances, this album offers kind of a counter-balance to the much louder, faster, dirtier Muses album. The strange thing is you can almost hear it make sense when you play the two together.

They are clearly the same in some ways, but opposite in others. Which is nice.
Standing alone, this still is a good album however, it is a whole as it is. It doesn’t need the help of the Muses album, but most probably the fans will buy them both anyway, so why not compare the two?
Musically this album can be placed among other solo singer/guitarists, atmosphere-wise. After you’ve played Jeff Buckley, Heather Nova and Patricia Morrison, if you are still in the same mood, don’t hesitate to put this album in your player to finish the night with. All you need now is a few candles, a bottle of wine and a book or a nice conversation. Good night.
