Thanks to bands like Morning Again or All Out War, hardcore and metal are no longer seen as two separate things. Thanks to other bands, hardcore can also be placed on one line with bad metal. I’m not saying that Narziss is a bad band, but this MCD certainly has some moments that make me long for some old Slayer-records. The German five-piece play heavily trash-inspired hardcore with a lot of tempo changes and breaks. Musically, the band isn’t bad at all and the two guitarists definitely know how to get the most out of their instruments, but there’s more to it than just that. I like the Arkangel-like mid-tempo parts of the songs, but in the faster parts the drummer usually fails to use his imagination and just bangs away on his kit with lots of double bass, which completely fails to grab me by the balls and makes me reach for the remote control instead. The singer also doesn’t sound as convincing as, for example, the guy from Caliban (which is no shame at all), but his thick, thick accent (think ‘Allo, Allo’, the notorious ’80 TV show) gives the music an unwanted element of comedy.

The band has a German name, explicitly refers to the German lyrics on their website, but still decide to sing in English. I would have loved to hear them sing in their native language (Thereby seizing the opportunity to set themselves apart from the 1,000,000 of other metalcore bands out there), but no such thing going on here. I also don’t really get what the lyrics are about, but I’m not sure whether this can be contributed to my lack of feeling for poetry or messed up translation. The artwork for this release looks great, the guitarwork is very well done here, and if the drummer gets his shit together for a next release (this isn`t their first release, by the way, I just don`t know the older ones), there might be a lot of room for improvement. Check out the song ‘Gods Warriors’ if you want to know what this band is capable of.
