This metal band from Israel (who now reside in The Netherlands) return with their third effort. If you think of Meclechesh (try to spell that band name!) there is one word that comes to mind: original. But why are they so original? Well, they are a death metal band, but a death metal that mixes the roots of Israelian traditional music with furious death metal. “Apkallu Counsel” is a good example of this. It’s fast, it’s furious, yet catchy due to the eastern influences.

Meclechesh style isn’t limited to death metal however. There are influences from black, heavy and thrash metal, and that makes this CD all the more enjoyable. The vocals of Ashmedi vary from an ‘evil scream’ to some ‘heavy metal croons’. It’s not an easy listening CD, it really has to grow on you, but once that has happened, you will be convinced: every song is a punch in the face and after listening to the 8 songs (and 2 instrumentals), you will find yourself in the corner of the ring, confused, lying on the ground and wondering whatever your name may be.

It is also a bonus that the production was done by Andy Larocque (King Diamond, Death). It does not sound like the music is coming from the neighbour’s kitchen, but it’s right in your face. It’s not as perfect as a Swedish metal production, but it’s comparable to Malevolent Creations “Envenomed”.

The lyrics are about mythology, Gods and Demons of ancient times. You can read them on their site (http://www.melechesh.com). It’s worth to visit that site (great artwork).

Favourite songs: “Of Mercury And Mercury”, “Apkallu Counsel” and “Purifier Of The Stars”.

Summary: Great, original metal album that will push Melechesh further into the major league of fine metal bands.
