You might know Society 1’s frontman Matt Zane. Yes indeed, this is the porn king that also did the Backstage Sluts videos and is on top of a big porno empire. But his interest for heavy music has spread with his own industrial band Society 1. The musical influences of Society 1 vary from the older Marilyn Manson, Nine Inch Nails and the newer Dope and Spineshank, with Zane’s own demented thoughts implemented through it all.
This isn’t the first release by Society 1. In 1999 the band released their debut album entitled Slacker Jesus. Now, porn king Zane (a.k.a. The Lord Nexus) returned with his band to release their sophomore album Exit Through Fear.
The album kicks off with the energetic “Nothing”, which is also the band’s first new single (accompanied by a sick and twisted video, bound to be banned by MTV). It has some nice moments with catchy sing-along choruses and Manson-like verses dripped in a dark yet slick atmosphere. “Nothing” really sets the pace for the album, and in my honest opinion, it’s a great choice for the first single. | |
Followed by songs like “Fornicate” and “Hate” the band has definitely put out a solid effort with Exit Through Fear that will most definitely be enjoyed by industrial metal fans. The band mostly reminds me of the infamous Dope with that same mainstream sound in their music.
In between all the industrial rage, the samples and noises, “Me” brings the listener back down to earth with slow, actually dull samples and repetitive vocals. After this track, the band goes right back to what they do best: industrial pounding. In short, Exit Through Fear has a great sound and some good catchy songs on it, but fails to interest me and probably other fans of the industrial scene as well. The album unfortunately lacks that spark that makes people want to go crazy. Society 1’s sound is just a lot of the same, song after song. Despite of that, I can imagine fans of this band will adore the album but it won’t do much for the rest of the metal scene. You’d be better off buying the first Dope album or wait for the upcoming Spineshank record.
