I consider myself a Lagwagon fan. Every album until now was worth buying (only “Trash” was not superb, but still contained quality). So I had been waiting a long time for this CD.
After years of silence, they now return with their 6th album. In those years of silence singer Joey Cape started a new Project: Bad Astronaut, a mix of emo, new-wave and singer/songwriter music. Sometimes it sounded like Lagwagon, but it has it’s own identity and you could hear Joey Cape had pleasure in what he did.
My first thought was: He had better stayed with Bad Astronaut and they should have called Lagwagon a day. The new Lagwagon draws the same influences as Bad Astronaut. That is no surprise if you know that Lagwagon singer Joey Cape wrote the whole record! So what you get is almost another Bad Astronaut record, only more punk.
“Burn”, “Falling Apart” and “Never Stops” are songs that could be on the last Astronaut record. And then the question rises: Is the new Lagwagon full of left-overs?. My answer is no. It still containa the quality that Lagwagon always had. | |
Emotional and catchy songs like “Burn”, “Falling Apart” and “No Dividers” are definitely what Lagwagon stands for. “Billionaire” is even a classic song (supberb)! But i do not get the same feeling I got while listening to “Hoss” or “Duh”.
Every Lagwagon member knows how to play their instruments; they are excellent musicians. “I Must Be Hateful” has a cool guitar melody riff you should check out. “Falling Apart” and “E dagger” are also some fine pieces of music.
Joey Cape is cynical in a humoristic way, as always. He has one of the best voices in the punkscene today. He can do a lot with it, and he does it on this record. If you listen to the first Lagwagon record and compare it to this, you hear the progression in his voice (and in Lagwagon in general).
To sum it up, Lagwagon made another good CD. But I can hear too many influences from Bad Astronaut or emo-bands. They should stick to their original sound wich they created on “Duh”, “Trashed”, “Hoss”, etc. It is a good CD, but it is not the Lagwagon-quality I expected from them.
