El Poder Del Deseo means The Power Of Desire. I was not amused. That title reminded me of the band Africa (rock on!). Off to a bad start. All of a sudden, recollections of that 80’s song: “It’s the power of love”, by the light of my life: Foreigner (or something similar, which could be every 80’s band). Although my first reaction was: ‘is this their fifth album? Have they been making this no good ‘N Sync-metal for that long?’, it is not even that bad. Technically speaking they are certainly decent. The biggest problem is that the music requires a high-pitched heavy metal-voice or maybe occasional grunting, but it’s heavy rock, so that’s not happening. Besides that they’re Spanish, and although I had about 25 Spanish lessons (and was doing quite alright), I can’t at all make out what the singer is saying.
With all the poppy singing going on, after a while it gets a bit boring and you want something more powerful. The guitarplay sounds pretty good, but at certain points I think there should be much more and better solo’s. | |
The drums are also not very invigorating; they often feature the same rhythms, and I think a little more inventive double bass-usage would have been nice. You can put this album of Lujuria on whilst doing almost anything, you can bake pancakes to it and you can have a intellectually correct conversation over the phone, and that’s the biggest problem; it doesn’t go anywhere.
Add it all up and it comes to this: as I expected after being off to a bas start, this CD is not great. It has some nice touches, but doesn’t really follow-through on them; just when you think they are going the metal way, they change directions and head for Ronan Keating (song 9). El Poder Del Deseo probably won’t feature in my CD-player for long, because it doesn’t set a definitive tone, I don’t like the singing, the guitarplay could be better, and I am not ecstatic about the drums. Maybe heavy rock is just not my thing, or maybe there are people who like it when Bon Jovi mingles with metal. This CD just doesn’t go anywhere. (Frank M.) |
