Soulreaper is the band Dissection drummer Tobias R. Kellgren and guitarist Johan Norman formed after the disintegration of Dissection. For anyone who didn’t already know, Dissection front man Jon Nödtveidt was accused and found guilty of murdering a young homosexual and was sentenced to 8 years in jail.
The fame of Dissection still shows because one of the selling points Hammerheart uses for marketing this CD is to mention that Soulreaper ‘features ex-dissection members’.
Do Soulreaper really have to rely on these selling points and fame long gone? I certainly think not! “Life Erazer” claims its own reason for existence by being loaded to the brim with perfectly executed melodic death metal.
The songs are melodic but heavy as fuck and they all have one or two things to remember them by. | |
E.g. a cool chorus, a guitar solo, etc.
Of course the material reminds fiercely of Dissection but whereas Dissection chose to blend heavy metal with black metal, Soulreaper chooses a slightly different approach. It sounds like a mix between Dissection and melodic “Gothenburg” death metal.
The production of “Life Erazer” was done by Andy La Rocque in the famous Los Angered Studios and he did a superb job (as usual). I really love the way the guitars sound.
I don’t know what Jon Nödtveidt is capable of when he will be released from prison but his former band mates certainly have accomplished more in their musical life than just being ex-Dissection members. (Roy) |
