Dutch Assault is the fifth instalment of Relapse’s “Global Assault” series. Each compilation features a country and on this one my own little country The Netherlands is presented. I think it’s a really cool way to showcase (a part of) the underground scene from a country and I’m looking forward to the other chapters. Japanese Assault is scheduled to be released on the 8th of July so check it out. The CD kicks off with 10 tracks from Suppository. This is grind core in the traditional way, cool samples (the one with the Smurfes is hilarious), grunts and the over the top grind-scream. This is pure grinding madness.

Next band is Last Days Of Humanity and this is really brutal stuff; an ongoing assault of distorted grunts, slashing riffs and raging drums. Once in a while you just need a band like this to hear real aggression and gore. The song titles are in the best tradition of the genre (for instance “Decrepitated Regurgitations In Foetal Leprosy”) and everything else is also standard grind core, but there’s nothing wrong with that.

The only ‘band’ I don’t like that much on this compilation is S.M.E.S. Actually, it isn’t a real band but a solo-project of Last Days Of Humanity singer Erwin.

He created some sort of techno grind on his computer which doesn’t really convince me. The tracks are too simple and repetitive, and the vocals aren’t always that good. The best song of S.M.E.S on this compilation is “E.T’s Finger Up There” which is a bit faster than the other tracks and shows some potential.

The last band is the infamous Inhume and the best is saved for last because the tracks of this band blow the others away with ease. The sheer brutality of the four tracks is only matched by the excellent musical capabilities of these Dutchmen. Inhume is even more impressive if you know that the first 3 tracks are recorded in a live session and mastered in one afternoon. These songs were used for a demo for Osmose Productions and this label was as much impressed as I am because it resulted in a deal. The band’s next full length album is scheduled for a September 8th release. The final track on this fine compilation is a cover of the Regurgitate song “Genital Cancer”. All in all a good sampler to broaden your view on extreme music.
